It's that time of year again...with only 3 weekends left in 2004, it's time to start thinking about where you want to go in 2005.

I've got a big year planned, which unfortunately is probably only going to come true in a very small percentage due to the fact that I'll be 15 and STILL can't drive. frown

  • Staten Island - 1 day
  • Delaware - 1 day
  • Chesapeake - 2-3 days
  • Delaware Bay Cruise - 1 day
  • Maine - 3 days
  • Hudson-Champlain - 1-2 days
  • Long Island - maybe for the challenge?
  • maybe some more sailing
  • Maybe the NJ Challenge
  • Great Captain Island...a Grenwichian friend is going to help on this one
  • Maybe more NC
  • More VA on the way to the OBX
  • Chesapeake Cruise

I have a busy year! What do you have planned?

Here are my plans for 2005:

We'll be going to the North Shore (in MN) a few times in January and February. (No new lights, but we'll be visiting Split Rock.)

In June we'll be going on an Alaskan cruise. I'm not sure which lights our cruise ship will pass by. However, I'm hoping to see a few lighthouses (if the weather cooperates) on our Misty Fjords/lighthouse flight out of Ketchikan.

We'll be staying in Vancouver a few days before we fly home. I haven't checked out which lights we'll be seeing.

In October we'll be spending 9 days in Florida. We're definitely going to St. Augustine. We're flying to Florida two days before the rest of my family so that we can swim with the manatees in Crystal River. I'm hoping we can visit either Cedar Key, Anclote Key or Egmont Key during our stay in that area. It looks like we may not be able to make the ferry to get to Egmont Key because we'll just be finishing our manatee tour. I'll probably be adding a post at sometime for advice.

I'm not sure if the Apostle Island boat tour in August is still in the works.... If so, we're still considering it.

Actually, there are also a few super-powers that can also do this. If I see someone who gets carried away with hitting the "add reply" button I usually delete the extras. Just trying to be your friendly, local, full service Saint.........

Tammy,

Let me know offlist via e-mail what cruise ship and route you will be taking.

The gentleman who is planning the Hawaii Lighghouse tour for next October (which we may go on) just went to Alaska last year and did much research as to which Lighghouses can be seen from the ship he cruised on and met with the crew to let him know when they would be getting to those areas.

I can get the info from him if you are using the same route as he did.

Most of my lighthousing plans for 2005 involve North Carolina...go figure!
  • All the lights on the northern Outer Banks during Easter
  • Back to Oak Island & Old Baldy in April for the OBLHS Spring Retreat
  • Price's Creek during OBLHS Spring Retreat
  • Thomas Point & revisit some other Chesapeake lights in May; Hatteras & Bodie at least -OBLHS Board Meeting weekend
  • Possibly visiting my brother in Boston in June w/a revisit to Portsmouth Harbor light, etc.
  • August- back to Beaufort, NC, a hop, skip and jump...er...skiff? to Cape Lookout
  • Maryland Lighthouse Challenge
  • October - Outer Banks of NC for the Keeper's Weekend & if the calendar dates don't interfere, the NJ Challenge
  • Dec.- takes me back to Beaufort, NC!

And anytime I head south on I-64 will involve a visit to the VA Tidewater lights.

Whew!! Hope I really do get to much of this list!

Let's see, 2005

April - Delaware land lights
May - Long Island Lighthouse Challenge
July - Hampton Roads CCUSLHS trip (I'm the coordinator and there may be a few surprises on this trip, it all works out.)
August - REUNION, AND AS MANY LIGHTS THAT WE CAN SEE WHILE IN THE GREAT LAKES AREA.
October - Maybe Connecticut.

That's all I can think of right now.

Still have loads of lights to see in New England. Will spend the majority of my time doing that and going back to some of the old favorites for another look. I am also going to try to locate sites where the lighthouses no longer exist such as Whale ROck in RI. These can be very interesting sites as a few still have the keepers house in place or an oil house.

Greg you're going to make my brain have to do some thinking.... laugh

January ...going to Orlando and plan on seeing Ponce & St. Augustine (and any others in that area I can get in to)

March ...going to try to get to the lighthouse in Cozumel while on a cruise

July ...in Europe for 17 days on a cruise so I'm not sure exactly what lights I will see but planning on seeings lights around Dover and Plymouth, England (will go by the Eddystone lighthouse) and hope to see some lights in Ireland, Scotland, and Norway.

August ...2005 HL Reunion and lights on Lake Huron and Superior

That's as far as I have for sure planned but will be back to Hawaii some time next year and would also like to take a drive down the Oregon coast. I'm also planning my daughters wedding for April 16, 2005 so I'll have a busy year.

I don't have any big plans for the summer but I do hope to do a couple of things. In June, I am planning on taking a bus trip to Nantucket. It is not a lighthouse trip but I am sure that I will be able to see the lighthouse there. And before anyone asks, the bus will probably take the ferry across or just the passengers from the bus will take the ferry. Then sometime in the summer, I have hopes to getting together with Beaconfollower and see some lights in NC or FL. I have never been that far south so it should be great fun.

I don't have many concrete plans yet for next year. Esther & I are planning on going to the Hot Chocolate, Lighthouses & You NELL event in January in MA.

We may get to Nantucket in May for the NELL Meeting.

I hope to get to some of the trips being planned by the CCUSLHS.

Things are in flux right now- I'll have a better idea as soon as Esther decides what our big trip for 2005 is- Korea in June or the Hawaiian Lighthouse Cruise in October.

Time will tell.

Bob,

Which one would you like to cover the costs of? laugh

Seriously, both trips done the way we'd like to do them would be close to or over 2 weeks long and Esther is still employed and doesn't quite get that much time off.

Things are also up in the air because she just got a promotion that she starts on 1-3 so our plans for January especially are not set in stone.

I think I have this posting thing figured out so I'll try again!
Sis and I have grat plans for 2005!
January: w/NELL for LH's and Hot Chocolate
March: 2 weeks in Florida to see some we didn't
see last year.
April: any possible on way to and from Myrtle
Beach
May: LI Challenge
August/Sept.: REUNION to see any and every LH
possible. It's likely to be our only trip
to that area. We will also try to fit in
our annual Maine trip. We would like to try
the Maryland Challenge but doesn't look so
good now I see our plans. If we do then...
October: NJ Challenge again.
We also hope to not overextend ourselves and maintain our obligations to our own club: Eastern Great Lakes HLCC.
Looks pretty daunting now that I look at it on paper.
Here goes, no eggnog, 1post.

Congratulations Rick,

You did just fine. But look at it this way. Some of us older folks (me at 63) probably need to read something twice because we forgot what we read the first time -- or even that we read it.

Sounds like a very full lighthouse year for you in 2005.

Hopefully we can get together during the NJ Lighthouse Challenge in 2005.

No concrete lighthouse plans for 2005.

I'll be around for the LI Challenge (working, of course) and the LI Gold Coast Cruise in May.

Other than that, we kicking around the idea of staying at Rose Island and Saugerties for the honeymoon.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to do the NJ Challenge. Since I'm a Joizey gal and I haven't seen all the NJ lights, this is something I HAVE to do. Of course, I say that every year and something always comes up where I can't go. Maybe I have NJ curse like Dennis has his LI curse eek laugh :p

Lighthouse visits in 2005? I know I will be sending my dockage reservation form to Block Island on 1/1/05. It's the only way you have a chance at dockage at the BI Boat Basin for the prime weeks. I tried to make reservations a year in advance but they don't start taking them until January 1.

I've always enjoyed the winter trips to New England lights on those bright and sunny but extremely cold days when we can escape. I also enjoy the first warmth of late winter or early spring and will venture out to lights within driving distance.

Then there's the boating season. Tentative plans usually have us traveling anywhere from Nantucket to Long Island, NY. Plenty of lights to see along the way. The biggest controlling factor is the weather. The older and perhaps smarter I get, the less likely you'll find me wandering the high seas in bad weather.

Wherever I do end up, you'll see the pics and read the stories here at the CF.

It looks like I'll be going to Korea so I'm going to have to do some research on Lighghtouses near Daegu or soeul.

We'll definitely get to some in both the Seattle, WA and Vancouver,BC area as we plan on spending 2-3 days in each place on the way to or from Korea.

Unfortunately this means the Hawaii Lighthouse Cruise is out.

We still plan on the Hot Chocolate Trip to MA in January and hopefully the Nantucket trip in May.

The LI Challenge is a longshot, as is the Maryland Challenge. We'll either volunteer at the NN or do at least part of it again.

I still hope to get to more of the Chesapeake area Lighthouses either when we go to the Maryland challenge or just a weekend trip on it's own.

I'm still formulating other possible trips- some of which might include Lighthouses.

If the gods of time, money and employment are willing ...

-- 1st goal ... May 1, 2005, The Third Annual Gold Coast Lighthouse Cruise of Long Island Sound

-- 2nd goal ... a road trip to Lake Oneida, to vist the 3 (maybe 4) lights spoken about by Sue and Mike during a posting spree in November...

-- 3rd goal ... a Chesapeake Bay cruise

-- Long term Goal ... I've made it to the Eastern shore of Lake Michigan ... now I would like to attempt the Western shore (and UP of Michigan)

-- (ALSO .. I've now made it to a OBLHS event ... Being a member since 1996, I would very much like to now make a NJLHS meeting)

-- I hope 2005 brings you all to new lights and destinations ...

-- Barry

Only plan so far is the Hot Chocolate Event with the NELL group on January 8th. Pleeeeze don't let there be a snow storm!!!

I've seen these lights before, from the water, but it would be great to see them up close and personal.

I'm going to be going to the East Coast (New Jersey) to visit my aunt sometime this spring and my sister and brother in law are being transferred to Ft. Lewis, Washington, so I want to fly out there, too! Only been to Seattle once, and that was on my honeymoon. Want to hit some new lights on both our coasts! However, I will not be at the Reunion or the Apostle trip this year - on top of building a house, Mary's going to be a big sister end of July/early August!

Congratulations on both of your new additions!

But let's see, the topic is "Your 2005 Lighthousing Plans". Well, I guess that fits, at least as far as "Your 2005 Plans" are concerned.

And Mary becomming a big sister on the top of your house? Or did I get that mixed up?

I'd venture to say that our lighthouseing will be limited to that which we'll be doing on the way to the reunion as our Maggie will also be a big sister in April. We hope to get the Northeast coast between Sturgeon Point and Cheyboygan covered, as this is the last piece of Michigan we havent seen. Othe rthan that, I think we'll be occupied this year,

Jen, congrats on the child and house! What a good combo!

When you come to NJ, shoot me an email. Maybe we can get together! I seem to have lots of possibilities for meeting lighthousers this year! laugh

Congratulations Jen. You sure like to tackle several big projects all at once. Sound like a win-win situation.

Dennis,
Sis and I are going to NELL's Hot Chocolate event also. We may stay w/my cousin in Hull but hopefully this time we can hook up.
Of course this is all dependent on the upstate NY snow machine being turned off. 3ft. of snow can appear up here in a hurry!

Grover,
Let us know when you will be in upstate NY! Sis' camp is w/in walking distance of the Verona Beach Light. It is not open but we are trying to get a connection w/the group involved with its renovation for our club meeting in the spring. Maybe we could hook you up!!!

Rick,

I'm hoping for the weather to cooperate the weekend of the HCLH&Y. I can deal with the cold, but I'm not driving that distance in the snow.

I'm sure we can get together if we both get there. We'll be staying over Saturday night and I'm hoping to get to some other Lighthouses on Sunday on the way home.

Congrats to Mike and family on the new arrival! Boy or girl or waiting to find out?

Thanks Jen, and the same to you. I think we're going to wait and see. Honestly, doesn't really matter what it is to me, as long as, everybody together now, "it's healthy"! I think everyone in our girl heavy families are hoping for a boy, but Maggie wants a baby sister. We'll have to wait and see. How about you?

Congrats to Mike and his family as well. smile

Mike...have you been to any hockey games in Salt Lake City? Almost 30 years ago (hard to believe) I was a Salt Lake Golden Eagles "hockey girl". We mostly just had to stand around in little mini-skirts with white go-go boots.

We were supposed to help with seating the crowd but spent more time trying to keep the rowdy guys from flipping up our skirts.

No Lorie, haven't made Salt Lake City yet. Closest I've come has been Las Vegas. Chearleaders at hockey games are rare even today. You may have been one of the pioneers. :p And that is meant as a compliment. laugh (For those that may be confused with this exchange, see "Nothing to do with anything")

Kinda off topic, but you live right outside Salt Lake (I know where you ALL live now...I love creating the Wacko map!), and you like hockey...did you go to any Olympic events in '02? I'm basically getting to...do you have any cool Olympic stuff you're willing to give up for my collection? wink

We have reached the limit, but let's continue this discussion of Lorie's intersting past at Part 2
