Sunday morning I got up early and rented a wet suit and surfboard and hit the beach:

After an hour of 'hanging 10' I got packed up and checked out ot the "Com ort Inn" at Nag's Head (sign damaged due to Isabel):

I stopped at the Wright Brothers Memorial which is gearing up for the Celebration of 100 years of flight on December 17. It was not a particularly impressive site, looks nothing like it did 100 years ago (sand dunes then, cut grass and woods now.)

Headed north to Virginia Beach and a visit to the Cape Henry Lighthouses.

Old Cape Henry viewed from the beach area. That's a 'yellow ribbon' tied about the old girl

View of the dome from inside the lantern room. .

The view of New Cape Henry Lighthouse from inside the Old Cape Henry lantern room.

New Cape Henry Lighthouse from the beach area.

That's it for this trip. Five Lighthouses and two Lifesaving Stations and I climbed three of the five. Heading back to Arizona at 8 AM ET Monday morning.

Lots of good times, met some old friends, met some friends I've talked to and emailed, but never met before and made some new lighthouse friends!

The Lighthouse Stickers were well-received at Saturday night's dinner.

Lovely photos John. It sure was nice following along on your trip. I love to travel and I love shooting lighthouses but it always feels good to get home. smile

Thanks for sharing your trip, John! You can't help but love Cape Henry with it's unusual color scheme of vertical black and white stripes. Is there any other light in the United States that's painted that way?

Just got back home. Thanks for your comments. I enjoy everyone's lighthouse travel reporting so much, I had to contribute mine.

I should have given better instructions to that guy on the beach I gave my camera to to take pictures while I was surfing. He didn't get it sharp enough to you could really tell it was me. smile

I have a new appreciation for 56K mondem users and will try to post smaller photos in the future and fewer per thread.

I also have a new appreciation for Kinkos. They really provide service for 'road warriors' who need connections while away from home. No charge if you bring in your laptop and they have a broadband Internet connection. They do charge for print copies, of course. Most, if not all of them are open 24 hours so if you need to do some work at 10 PM, it's not a problem.

This was my first real trip to the Outer Banks. I did make one half-day venture to Roanoke Island when I was in Dare County about 25-30 years ago, but didn't see any lighthouses (so you can't really say you've been to the Outer Banks unless you've seen lighthouses.)

Welcome home John. I decided to make a quick trip down to Lake Mead for an end of the season boating weekend. It was still 96 degrees!

It was nice getting home tonight and reading about your OB weekend. I just love visiting there. smile

Thanks for all the nice write-ups and pictures.

John...thanks so much for the photos and story of our weekend celebration on the Outer Banks!

It was a pleasure to finally meet you in person. We're all so glad you were able to attend.
