First we take the ferry from Orient Point to New London...

We got a very nice view of Orient Point lighthouse from the ferry...

It was a beautiful day to cross the sound and a lot of boats were taking advantage of it...

The ferry went fairly close to Plum Island light, also...

New London Ledge light was what the Captain aimed the ferry at for much of the crossing...

New London lighthouse looks a lot different from the water...

We also passed by where Ron Foster works...

Then on to Portsmouth...

We arrived to late for the open house but still managed to get a couple pictures..

You can't go to Portsmouth without taking a picture of Whaleback...

It just doesn't get any better than this...

Great pics, Paul! The ferry ride from Orient Pt. to New London is a great ride and a fabulous opportunity for lighthouse pics, especially if you have a long lens.

After seeing what the traffic looked like going to the Regional, I booked the Ferry for the return trip home. Lorna and I caught the six o'clock boat and watched the sun set over the sound. It was a nice trip!

Great pictures Paul. Looking forward to the rest of your trip. We have friends leaving here tomorrow for Maine. They'll be starting at Nubble and working their way up to E. Quoddy. So if you happen to run into a medium sized 57 year old guy with dark hair and glasses, ask if he's Frank Sweet! smile

And you've only just begun, Paul and Sue.
Hope you catch the low tide crossing at East Quoddy, and can't wait to see your candy stripes at West Quoddy. Look out for the foghorn!

I'll add the words in the morning...

Cape Neddick never looked better... it is always like it is on a stage, presenting it's best side to you!

The flower's around the area were in full bloom...

The pollen was in the air!

Another beautiful day at a lighthouse..

We made a quick stop to Lighthouse Depot where they now have a Museum on the grounds.. and Sue picked up a lot of early christmas presents..

We had fun finding the way back to a nice but distant view of Wood Island Lighthouse.. another one to add to the list of been there and HL should make it..

Of course we couldn't just drive by Portland head Lighthouse without stopping by for a few pictures..

We were driving to Brunswick from Portland and looking for the Observatory while driving through Portland and low and behold the Neverlost took us right by it... It is in perfect condition as you can see..

We added another light to the list when we made it to Doubling Point Light...

The light has been completely restored by the Friends of the Doubling Point Light...

It is located on the Kennebec River and was established in 1898...

The keepers cottage was in very nice condition also...

I think there is an old saying that goes, " White sky in the morning, lighthouse photographer take warning!"
Yep, we got up to total overcast skies, but at least it wasn't raining, yet!

First stop Pemaquid... when the sky is white you try other things to make the shot..

On the way to Marshall Pt we passed by Tenants Harbor Light... It really is there, the house is right in the middle of the Island with the tower to the left of the house.. Some Tenant's harbor residents promised me that it was right there!

Marshall Point didn't come out bad even though it also is a white lighthouse against a white sky...

I thouht I would show the backside of the house for those who own the HL version to compare that side, also..

The white sky turned into a good case of fog by the time we reached Owl's Head...

The fog made it kinda cool, especially with the fog horn blasting every 5 seconds!

One last look through the fog that was just rolling in by now!!

Next stop Fort Point not as much fog there but the good old overcast stayed with us...

You do what you have to do to fill up the image and limit the amount of overcast in the image.. Nobody was ringing the fog bell!

Nice mailbox!

While driving to Dyce Lighthouse, we got a return look at Fort Point from the opposite shore across a farmer's field...

Dyce Lightouse and tower are in great condition... The house is a restored house after it was almost destroyed years ago...

It almost doesn't get any better than this! A blue sky with some white fluffy clouds would have made it a perfect day.. It was pretty darned close any way!

Paul,

These photos are great. I enjoyed your creativity. The fog is cool. The photo of Portland Head is beautiful. I also like how you captured the reflection of Pemaquid.

Some day I hope to visit some of these lights!

Thanks for sharing.

We have been out of the country the last two days, literally... with no phone lines to connect online ...We stayed at the Owen House Bed & Breakfast... We highly recommend it if you ever need to spend the night on Campobello and we highly recommend that you do!!!
The following images were from last Wednesday...

When you first walk up to this back lit lighthouse, something just doesn't look right...

It's a West Quoddy variation... I am going to have to tell Bill they made the stripes the wrong color!

They are painting everything.. It was a little dissapointing to have gray stripes on Quoddy but then I realized I already had pictures of it with red stripes and it really needed painting..

Mulholland light welcomes you to the Campobello Island... It was beautiful...and the correct colors..

There were six Sea Lions in the channel welcoming us to Canada, also...

Our first peek at East Quoddy... it appears to be the right colors, also..

That looks like a Hoosier Lighthousing Club member climbing down the rocks to go over to East Quoddy..

We met up with Harold and Shellie Breen at Ellsworth, ME, the night before... after playing lighthouse tag up the coastline of Maine..

So they went over to East Quoddy with us!

As you can see we still had to wait a little while for the tide to go down before crossing this part, to climb the ladder behind them...

From to edge of the next little island East Quoddy looks like it is on a stage, also..

It was a beautiful day to go lighthousing with Great friends!!

On the way back to the main Island, Sue looks pretty proud of herself, having made the trek over to the light.. She didn't go with me 6 years ago when I first made the trek...
The new ladders are great and make that part of the trip much easier, but the rocks and seaweed are still quite a challenge!

Thursday at Campobello

This is the Owen House Bed & Breakfast where we stayed for two nights on the Island.. It was very nice.. The Breen's went back down the coastline on Wednesday to Bar Harbor on their way home..

The spider's had kept busy that morning!
As we were heading out to explore the rest of the Island (and try to hook up with a whale watch boat ride), Sue asked there would be enough to do for a whole day.. I assured her there was!

We found a point in the Roosevelt Park where you have the closest view of the Lubec Channel Light...

We went back to the point to get more images of East Quoddy at high tide.. from a new viewing area near the new parking lot... and to see about the boat trip... they said they needed 5 to go on the trip and so far we were the only ones..

The new ladders look pretty cool at hight tide!

We arrived at the boat before 1pm. Only one other person was there. When I explained to Paul (nice name), the captain, that I really wanted to go out to the lighthouse even if we couldn't do the whole whale watch, he said he would be glad to take us out to the light!

We saw at 6 Eagle's on the way out to the light... Paul said about 300 pairs live in the area..

This is too cool!

I know Sue wanted to see a whale but this is much better, at least it is to me!

No white sky today... just white clouds and what a sky!!

After I gave Captain Paul a tip for taking us out on the boat, he asked if I wanted him to get any closer..

So he did!!

This one is for Tim and Mark!

That night I had Lobster at one of two places still open on the Island, Fish Market Restaurant..

Sue named the Lobster.. I don't know why but I do know that he weighed 4 lbs!!

Sue and I arrive back at the Owen House..
It just doesn't get any better than this!!

Friday and we are heading home!

We visited one final Maine light before heading back to Indy.. It is the Whitlock Mill Light on the St Croix River and it has the honor of being the furthest most Northern Maine light..

Sue has been wanting to see a Moose the whole trip and as we drove through a small New Hampshire town, there he was!

We had a very nice dinner at "The Common Man", there wasn't anything common about their food or service!

Great pictures as usual Paul. I really enjoyed the East Quoddy at HIgh tide. We missed that part of it. Quite a variation in the level of water between the high and low tides.

Thanks for the nice comments from everyone, I hope I have been able to share just a little bit of what has been a Great trip up the Maine coastline with you... It makes it even more fun for me!

Sorry the thread takes a while to load but you should try uploading all of these images with some very slow AOL connections on the road...

I will start a new thread if I load any more images on the way home and change some of the early images into links to speed up the loading process the next time I get on line..

Today we head to Auburn, NY and will spend some time with another lighthousing buddy, JJ!

It looks like it is going to be mostly overcast and rainy much like yesterday but Sue can enjoy some of the trees that have started to change as we cut across NH, VT and then NY..

Hi Paul,

Great pictures .... loved the pictures taken in the East Quoddy area. Sounds like you had a really nice trip. laugh

Carol & I only went up as far as Portland, Me. after the Regional before heading home. Maybe next year we'll go further north up the coast? confused

Hi Paul,

Great pictures as usual; thanks for sharing.

When we visited East Quoddy last year, the ladders had not yet been replaced - and were in really bad shape. That trip is tricky enough without having to negotiate missing rungs and rusty railings. It's a great adventure, though!

We did not go back at high tide. I wish we had; the difference is astonishing! I really liked your shots from the boat.

Our visit to Owl's Head was on a beautiful, sunny, blue-sky day. Your photos have MUCH more atmosphere. I guess I'm never satisfied.

Your pictures are great Paul.
I have also done the Maine Lighthouse scene many times, as I used to live in Maine and still go back every chance I get.
I sure hope they put the red stripes back on West
Quoddy! It's such a beautiful lighthouse.
It rained the day we went to see Owl's Head and
Marshall Point but I still got really neat pictures. Marshall Point had the light on.
