One of the two 32 meter high Rostral Columns in St. Petersburg … date back to 1810 and is located on Vasilyevsky Island. The columns were erected in imitation of an ancient Roman custom to put up triumphal columns in honor of naval victories and decorate them with rostra ---- the prows of defeated ships.



In the period before 1885, when there had been a port in the immediate area, the columns had served as lighthouses: the winding stairways inside of them lead to the upper platforms where signal lamps were kept burning. Since 1957, when gas has been supplied to jets in the bowls, bright torches are lit over the Rostral Columns on festive days.

Oh brother, I post a few photos of some itsy-bitsy lighthouses in Canada and along comes Russia for Heaven's sake! And then I'm supposed to come up with the name of Dan's lighthouses???!!!

(Personally Dan, I think that these folks are just jealous that they haven't had the opportunity to see "our" lighthouses! Thanks so much for posting your photos. No matter the names, it's just so neat to see your photos! )

If you had to zoom the camera out to 40x to get that picture in part 1, how could you tell there was even anything there with the naked eye?

Peterhoff Lighthouse sounds about right. I remember when Gary Martin posted it's picture in the form of a puzzle last year. I couldn't remember the name of it though.

As far as the light on Lake Ladoga was concerned, I had noticed a little blip on the horizon and checked it out with a pair of binoculars. I followed up with the camera to get the photo shot that I did. Believe me, it was a long way off!

PS: What are the rules in the Map Room? Are the posted pictures to be all of lighthouses or can some photos of churches and cathedrals be posted? we saw some many churches and cathedrals that a Brit that was on the cruise, began saying "ABC" (Another Bloody Church)!!

I vote for pictures of just about anything. Just remember this is a family forum.

We've had photos of garbage dump signs, why not Cathedrals!

Or even a Space Odyssey !

Churches and Cathedrals are just "lighthouses" of the religious variety. Built for many of the same reasons -- to be seen at a distance and guide souls in distress to safe havens.

It's fascinating to see the difference in arctitecture. So many lighthouses in other countries that I have seen (buy photo journey!) are very ornate.

For those who remember that "dump sign" which read something like "Trucks over 45 feet bare left", it has now been removed and replace with one that says "keep left"!

Thanks for sharing the pictures Dan. John and I were in St. Petersburg a couple of years ago. We were standing in line to get into The Hermitage museum and I looked across the street and saw the Rostral Columns. I had no idea what they were but they looked neat so I happened to take a picture of them.

We also went out to Peterhof. That is a beautiful place to visit. It kind of reminded us of Versailles in Paris.
