Recently I returned from my second trip in the last six months to Northern Europe. My daughter and her family (husband and two children) moved to Denmark last fall so my wife and I have gone over twice (so far) to visit and sightsee. We have seen a lot of great sights and places but have also done a fair amount of lighthousing in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany and Netherlands. I thought I would share some of my photos of some of the more interesting lighthouses in these countries. This episode will be lighthouses in Denmark and I will follow up in the future with photos of lighthouses in the other countries mentioned above. First is Skagen Light, the tallest light in Denmark: This is Fornaes Light: Gjerrild Light: Skagens Rev Lightship located in Ebeltoft: And Sletterhage Light: I'll continue on the next post.

Here are more. Strib Odde Light: Knudshoved Light with replica of old "swing fire": Sprogo Light: Trekroner Light and old fort guarding the entrance to Copenhagen's harbor. The two little round things with the red and white checks are the old range lights which are no longer in use: Helsingor Havn North Mole Light: More on the next post.

And to finish this episode: Kronborg Light - an integral part of Kronborg Castle: And finally, Nakkehoved West Light: I hope you all enjoy these. If so, I'll post photos from the other countries we visited in the near future. Larry

Larry,
Thanks for the photos- some of them bring back good memories.
Esther and I were in Northern Europe last July on a cruise and saw a few of the same lighthouses- but mostly from a greater distance than you did. I have photos of the skagen Lighthouses but the detail is much pooer due to distance and sun glare. The photos of Kronborg Light that I took also suffer from the sun glare.
It took me quite a bit of searching on the internet to establish any information on Kronborg Light - an integral part of Kronborg Castle.
We docked very close to the Trekroner Light in Copenhagen. I knew of the small lights on the opposites sides of the entrance to the harbor but was unaware that there were two more lights on the Fort site. I'll have to up my count by 2.
I'm sure i speak for just about everybody else- post away. the more the merrier. I'm hoping you got some better shots of some of the lights I was able to see from a distance.
Dennis

It is "Elsinore" ... the setting for Hamlet Prince of Denmark by THE BARD William Shakespeare It was also a prison for Prinzess Caroline Mathilda of Wales ... the sister of King George III ... The castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site these days!!!

Margret,
Correct. Thanks for the other two pieces of information- I was unaware of them. I must have missed them in my research last summer

Dennis,
You've got to really work at it if you want to surpass Margret.

What time of year did you take the pics? These were taken last month except for Kronborg, Helsingor and Strib Odde which were taken last December. As you can see, we had great weather during our visits. Based on your encouragement, I will post more from the other countries soon. Larry

You've got to really work at it if you want to surpass Margret ... not really ... I knew about Hamlet from school and the other two bits of information I found online, when I researched the castle, because we have a few stamps etc. of the castle. Since it is a "pucker lighthouse" ...

Oh wow, Larry, super, I love your photos, thanks! Brings back fond memories of the Intenational Lighthouse Game. Is that a crack down the Skagen lighthouse? And we get the Bard and windmills to boot. Looking forward to more!

posted 06-05-2007 08:55 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is that a crack down the Skagen lighthouse? Yes, a rather large crack although it didn't go much further up the tower at this point. However, note the cable straps all the way up the tower - presumeably to hold it together. posted 06-06-2007 07:39 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Great Pictures. The lights are so different over there. One of the things I'm finding very interesting is the difference in lighthouses by country. Each countries lighthouses seem to have a character of their own. For example look at the roofs of the lantern rooms on many of the lights shown above and how they are different from ours. Larry
