My wife and I are planning a trip to Maine in October. It is a weekend trip, but we want to maximize our lighthouse seeing. We will not go unfortunately to Bar Harbor nor will we leave the mainland except to maybe take the mail boat out of Portland. However, we will travel from the Hampshire border to about two-three hours north of Portland on the coast. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Tim H

Tim... a must visit light (Nubble) is located in York, Maine. It is a gorgeous lighthouse and will definitely be worth your while. It's very picturesque.

Tim,

I vote for Pemaquid Point and Marshall Point. Marshall Point is about 2 hrs north and Pemaquid is in between the two.

Owls Head is another nice one just a bit further north nearer to Rockland.

Pemaquid has a nice museum and so does Marshall Point. they are small , but nice.

Pemaquid is a very striking place. You will get some great pictures there.

It's about a 5-6 hr round trip from Portland to the 3 lighthouses and back according to Delorme Street Atlas.

Dennis

Hi Tim,
Portland Head is an obvious choice. Also in the Portland area is Cape Elizabeth. This is a little hard to get close to because it is in a private neighborhood. You can still view it from the road below by the beach. Spring Point Ledge is easy to locate in Portland. You can walk out the large rocks to get up close to it. Very close to Spring Point is Portland Breakwater. I had a little more trouble locating this light because the area surrounding it was kind of run down. You can also walk up next to this light for picture taking.

This brings back fond memories of the 98 HL Reunion. Can't wait for the 2001 Reunion! I sure hope to be one to attend.

You have to go to Nubble! If you need a place to stay that has a unbelievable view stay at the Viewpoint. Pretty expensive but you will never forget it. Check them out on the Web. All their rooms face the light. I didn't even sleep in the bed, I slept on the sofa so I could take it all in. You will love Maine!!!
