The first two lights of the day, starting off about 7:30am on Friday, June 2, 2006, was Warwick and Pomham Rocks. Warwick is an active USCG lighthouse with residents, but when Fran and I arrived at the light, the gate was open. We parked outside the entrance and knocked on the door. The resident graciously allowed us to walk around the exterior and take photos. This light is normally not open to the public, so what a great way to start off the day!! The entire day it was foggy and overcast, but we worked with what we had. Warwick is such a scenic spot, and the view is incredible here! Super wide angle shot of the keeper's quarter and the tower, overlooking Narragansett Bay. Closer to the light tower, we found this sidewalk leading to the keeper's quarters. In front of the light, with the Bay behind me. And the tower from behind - I was between the fence and the garage, so it was a tight squeeze. Next stop was Pomham Rocks. This lighthouse has recently undergone a huge restoration. It resides a mile offshore in Narragansett Bay, so the only way to get a decent view is from a neighboring apartment complex and/or the bike path that runs parallel with the water. This shot was taken from the apartment complex, which was on a good enough hill I was able to use the water as a backdrop. We then walked down to the bike path via a shortcut - the apartment maintenance manager was working, so he let us use his keys to walk through the locked gate meant for residents only down to the bike path. I worked in some of the flowering shrubs in this next capture. And another good closeup with my 200mm and a 1.4x converter. And the maintenance manager was nice enough to park his boat in front of the lighthouse for a great poster shot! Next up - Nyatt, Hog Shoal, and Bristol Ferry.

Jen,
Great pictures. Are the two roofs really that gawdy red/orange color, or did you doctor them up?

Thanks, Sandy. I think those two new roof are part of the recent restoration. No doctoring...just a basic levels and white balance adjustment along with some sharpening. That happens sometimes with my telephoto lens; combined with the overcast drizzle that makes for more saturation. I can tone it down a bit - should I?

Your shots of Ponham Rocks are particularly beautiful, Jen. I agree with Sandy that the orange, in particular, is a little too bright.

I really like the shot with the sail boat...super nice of the maintainence man to do that! The brightness of the orange seems to grab your eye and pull it there instead of the overall view. Maybe you should try toning it down a little to see if that helps. Enjoyed these!

Debbie, it did the same with my eye, too. Is it just one particular shot, or all of them? I toned down the closeup, #5, with the water as a backdrop. Let me know if that looks better. Sure appreciate the input from you guys!

They all look great Jen. The roof color didn't bother me...I was just enjoying looking at the beautiful settings.

I'm for toning it down--looks like it wants to blink off and on like a neon sign. So much for authenticity. Color chosen by someone who is blind in one eye and can't see out of the other. . . .

The Pomham roof color is very bright, almost gaudy. However, the big question has to be: is this the historically correct color or did someone get a whale of a deal on gaudy shingles? (Actually looks like a sheet metal type roof, not shingles.)

Jen-I think it's better. I think that you should try it on the last one also-the one with the sail boat. The others don't seem quite as bad...maybe because you have the trees and shrubs to contrast with? I agree that who ever picked the colors was lacking in something!

I think the shed roof and on the top is a 'tin' roof (a corruption of terne), and the more slanty part (technical term) is shingle. Terne roofs are quite common down in MD, and Point Lookout has a similar roof (and so does my house BTW). It is traditionally painted red, although it will fade and get dull with time.
