Pronunciation: "An act or manner of articulating speech. A way of articulating speech. A phonectic transcription of a word."

Do you think you know the correct pronunciation of the name of every lighthouse you come across or read about? Have you ever wondered if you were pronouncing the name correctly? Sometimes only those who live near a particular light know exactly how its name should be pronounced.

I thought it might be interesting to list a lighthouse name, spell out your personal pronunciation phonectically and see whether other forum members agree or not.

I'll start it off with Heceta Head :

I always referred to this lighthouse as "Ha-cee-tah Head". Then one time I heard Kim refer to it as "Hah-sa-tah Head". Pardon my butchering of phonectic spelling, but hopefully you will understand what I'm trying to express phonectically.

Can anyone give the correct pronunciation phonectically? Are there other lighthouse names you've wondered about?

I always said "heh-SIT-uh." But never been completely sure.

One that I think a bunch of people butcher, and I find my duty to correct, is Currituck Beach Light. I many people seem to say "Cyur-IH-tuck." However, the correct pronunciation of the word (in all uses), as pronounced by the locals, is "CURRY-tuck." Think of putting Indian food to bed.

Also, Bodie Island is said "body" not "bodey." Think of dead people instead of the party-boy skier (Bode Miller). Or, alternatively, think of Bode Miller passed out and drunk.

Okay, my little bit of "Pseudo-Banker" education done...

John, when I was at Seul Choix, I was told it's pronounced "SiSchwahh." Kinda all ran together. But like everything I guess it depends on who you listen too.

One of those might be the Yupper Pronunciation, eh?

Either one is closer than "Sewl Choicks"

Here's somewhat of an odd situation. Which is the correct name for the lighthouse in East Providence, RI, Pomham Rocks or Ponham Rocks? It may have started as a mispronunciation but now there appears to be two separate names for that light. Google both names to see what I mean.

I kept my boat for over a decade across from this light. I was always under the understanding that is was Pomham Rocks, yet many people refer to it at Ponham Rocks.

We have visted many of the lighthouses in the state of Washington and one of those is the very beautiful Mukilteo.

I believe the phonetic pronunciation is Ma-kal-tiou, but have always had a difficult time with this lighthouse name.

muk-el-t-o

The Snohomish Indian name for the point "muckl-el-teo" has endured in English as "Mukilteo". The original meaning was "the neck of a goose", that is, long and narrow, which was the shape of the spit of land that jutted out into the cold waters of Possession Sound. But over time, Muckl-el-teo" came to be known also as "a good camping ground" due to its popularity as a distinctive meeting place. And on March 1, 1906, the Mukilteo Light Station entered service on this spit of land.

I always get confused by Little Sable and Big Sable. I always thought "Sable" was pronounced
sa-ble, like the animal. But when I went to Michigan, everyone pronounced it sar-ble. What's
up with that?

Kay,

Like many places on the Great Lakes the points were named by the French fur traders. Over time some names of the pronunciations have been modified. Locally we sailors say sob-el.

Being a Spanish name, Heceta should be pronounced hay-say-ta although most people say he-see-ta.

Eric is correct on the pronounciation of Seul Choix. They pronounce it Sis- Shwa. The website also gives the correct pronounciation. smile

How about Point Aux Barques?
