Bold coast tours has finally made thier schedule for May 16 to see Puffins and the lighthouse. Does anyone know a good place to stay. I plan on going up to Cambello Island the next day. I saw some of the places to stay on the Bold Coast web but would like to know if anyon stayed at any of these, or someplace else. Not much of a choice up there.

We stayed at both the Old Coast Guard Station and one of the little motels in town in Lubec. Both were fine. Cost wise, the little motel was (I believe) the less expensive option.

I think we stayed at Lupine Lodge. It was nice but it was the last night before they closed for the winter so you could tell staff was anxious to close up. Not much going on at the end of the season. It was fun to hike out to the lighthouse since we were the only ones on the island. Roosevelt's summer cottage had just closed so we missed touring that but photographed it from the outside.

I stayed in a bed and breakfast once. Wasnt crazy about it. I will look into the Lupine Lodge. I called the Bold Coast cruise in Feb. and they said there would not be any boats for the week I am going to be there. I called this weekend and now they will. I am so happy thats 2 more lights to check of my list, Machias and Little river. If the weather is good the captain said we will land on the island to get great shots of the Puffins. I cant wait. less than 1 month away.

We stayed in the Lupine Lodge the first time on the Island, we have stayed at the Owen House the last three times on the island. The owner of the Owen House is the driving force behind all of the restoration at East Quoddy lighthouse. She paid for all of the new ladders and the installation costs of the ladders at the lighthouse site. She is a really neat person not to mention an excellent Water Colorist..

It was ok but the experience at the Owen House was much better. Their are a pair of eagles that nest in a tree in the front yard and the view from the front yard is wonderful.
The owner/artist is Joyce Morrell and along with fellow innkeeper Jan Meiners, they make you feel right at home. The breakfast of course is included in the room price.

The group that is doing the restoration has a website and the membership page is here...

"Friends of Head Harbour Lightstation"

Your trip reminds me I need to re-up my membership, I did it while I was there but forgot the past couple of years..

The captain for the Bold Coast boat said we might be able to go on the Island if the weather is good to see nesting puffins. I cant wait. I have 23 more days left.

The Owen House sounds a lot more interesting than the Lupine Lodge. We'll give it a try next time we stay in the area.

If memory serves me the time that we stayed at the Lupine Lodge they were closing for the season 2 days later.

If you eat lunch on the island, Fran you need to stop at the same place that Greg talked about in his blog, nice people and good food and they are the island's bakery, the Sweet Time Restaurant.

That's good to know as Sue and I are probably heading up that way again next year, though we probably will go in August. They say that is the best Moose peeping month in upper Maine..

You can't miss the Sweet Time it is on the road out (on the left) to the lighthouse, Route 774.

I don't know whether it is open at that time or what it is like to stay in but almost right next door to the Sweet Time is the: Whale Watch Motel
