Yesterday was supposed to be te first cruise out to the Harbor of Refuge Light. However, thanks to this lovely weather we have been having, it was cancelled. I was already down in the Delaware area so I snuck in a few new lights to add to my "Lights Seen" list. It was a dreary day with a few short moments of sun but those moments didn't match up with my lighthouse stops.

First stop was the Reedy Island Rear Range Light.

And my second stop was the Marcus Hook Rear Range Light.

On my way to the Marcus Hook light I caught a decent but distant view of the Bellvue Rear Range light located in Wilminton's Cherry Hill landfill. You can get a good view as you drive north on 495. I could have gotten a picture had I not been driving. So I would suggest having a travel companion and having the telephoto lens ready! Next time I know.

You had short moments of SUN????? Is that the big orange ball in the sky?

You can actually go to the landfill and ride out to the Bellvue light. I haven't done it yet, but I called them one day, and the woman told me all I had to do was stop in the office and sign a waiver. Oh, and the road to the light isn't paved. There is also a new, replacement tower there. The trash got too high! laugh

Bellvue and Marcus Hook are the last two land viewable Delaware lights I need on my list...

As Shirin said you can see Bellvue from 495 but there isn't a safe place to stop along the highway to take pictures so if you were northbound and in the passenger seat you might get a decent picture as you went over the bridge or if you were able to pull over on the shoulder of the road for a quick picture. It is also visible from the New Jersey side if you study the maps to figure out were to go for a picture, this picture was taken on our way to the Baltimore reunion I don't know if it is obscured by the moutain of trash now though.

The trip you were supposed to go on Sat. that was cancelled due to bad weather. The Delaware River & Bay Lighthouse Foundation has scheduled other dates to visit the Harbor of Refuge on June 21 July 5 July 19 Aug. 9 and Aug. 23. For info on those trips you can call them at 302-644-7046 or check their website.

I have been to the Bellevue Rear Range twice. The first time, several years ago, was in April and I was able to get to the tower and climb the steps to the front door. The second time was in June and the weeds and shrubs were too tall and dense to walk to the tower.

I rescheduled my trip for July. We'll see how that goes. If all else fails guess I'll go see the lightship in Delaware to add to my 40+3 List for the Chesapeake Chapter.

Shirin,

Next to the lighthship is the boathouse from the Lewes Life Saving Station, and right down the road are Delaware Breakwater & Harbor of Refuge if you haven't seen them yet.

If I remember correctly there is some sort of state park where you can get a view of the Harbor of Refuge and Breakwater lights. I think that is where I went when I saw the 2 lights a few years ago.

Shirin,

You remember correctly. you drive into the park (right next to the Lewes-Cape May Ferry Terminal) and go down to the Beach area (right next to the Pilot Tower) and you can walk out to get a great view of the Lighthouses.

We were there in Nov 2001 on our way back from Annapolis.

Thanks Dennis. I was hoping I wasn't confusing those lights with others. I'm begining to see why I journal or post info about my trips. I'll never remember everything about all of the lights I've seen in a few years.

Shirin,

In your case I'm astounded as to how you remember which Lighthouse your on your way to on a given weekend!

I think you hold the record for active memberships in Lighthouse Organizations.

Dennis
