Has anyone done the hike. I'm wondering how hard is the 3.5 mile walk. Going to Cal in Feb thinking of doing it. Can anybody help?

This lighthouse is not normally open to access since it sits on the edge of a nucleur power plant. As I recall, there is a hiking club or such that is allowed to take people up to the light along an existing trail. If this is the trek you are looking at, it would have to be a pretty uphill effort to get to the light.

When you get to the top, this is what will greet you. . .

Just to settle your mind, while the San Luis Light is on leasted land of PG&E's, the nuclear plant is around 7 miles north of the lighthouse.
It is not open each day, they are hiking tours each weekend. The number to call for more information is 805-541-TREK. And if your interested in visiting Piedras Blancas Point light in San Simeon the number there is 888-804-8608.
In the matter of San Luis Light, on the third Saturday of each month a work party will be at the light. They have a small gift dept. setup for the hikers that hike on that Sat.
Hope this helps you out. smile

Hi Twiggy,

I will be arriving in Long Beach on January 19th and I will be there through the following Tuesday, any chance you might be able to play tour guide and head to San Luis and Piedras? I never got the chance to go to San Luis with the club as Elizabeth and I were on our way back to the East coast. Send me some email if you are interested.

Thanks,

Sean Thompson

My wife and I did the hike several years ago and it was great. There are 1 or 2 sort of steep elevations but the guide was good and slow with the group. There was nothing to it and I definitly recommend it. The few from some of the points were gorgeous. Have a great time, I would do it again if I lived nearby.
