I am thinking about taking a trip to LI to view the Lights. How many days would I need without rushing and what lights would I be able to visit?

Hank,
Depends what time of year you're visiting. Summer traffic is a disaster. You could do in the fall or spring what it would take you twice the time in the summer. Email me your address and I'll send you a map to start.
Visit http://scroope.net/lighthouses/longisland.htm for more ideas.

I sent you an e-mail with my address. I would probably do this in the fall since I don't like to travel to a tourist area in the summer. Where would you reccommend staying if I planned to take 2-3 days to do this?

Hank(mea culpa),
There's a Holiday Inn Express in Stony Brook and a new Marriot Courtyard in the same area on the LIE. These are midIsland so would be a good base to go in any direction. Since it's off season you might want to spend one overnight in Montauk on the beach. If you work you trip around September 21, there a Evening Cruise from Greenport by Orient Point, Plum Island, Race Rock, and Long Beach Bar. http://lilighthousesociety.org/events/default.htm

Thanks for the information and the map. I won't hold against you that you called me Bruce in the response about the hotels.

The map arrived yesterday and looks really great. It just might turn out that the weekend in Sept might just work out for our tour. If it does I will contact you about the boat trip.

Just back from my week in Montauk! Did some scouting for you guys. Best places on the ocean are Wavecrest and the Panoramic View which are about 3 miles outside the village. Oceanside Beach Resort is the only motel in the village that I would recommend. All should have good prices after Labor Day. If your into camping Hither Hills State Park has beachside camping for about $25 a night.c Although this is up 400% in the past 22 years, it's still the deal of the century if you can get a site. Summer rentals are 11 months in advance but you should get lucky in the off season.

Don't forget you can camp in Cedar Point County Park almsot right on the beach...which is the park that Cedar Island lighthouse is in!

Here's where we are staying the next time we go to Montauk... of course it won't be in the summer when the rooms are at the highest rates.

Montauk Manor Rates

We had breakfast there last Fall after spending the night in a much more primitive motel with the United States Lighthouse Society tour... It is very nice!

The Montauk Manor is very nice and classy but is up on a high hill in the middle of town. It has great views but is not within walking distance to the beach which is the reason most people go the Montauk "The End" besides 'deep sea fishing' and yes, "THE LIGHTHOUSE"!

That's what your car is for... to drive down to the beach. Besides it's not that far of a walk to a beach, now as to the lighthouse, it is a few miles away....
