Sounds like a great week-end you have planned, Suzanne. Hopefully you will get some decent boating weather. We have been fortunate to see the land-based lights of the Keweenaw several years ago. Even found the Jacobsville light without the benefits of instructions!

The page you linked to also has directions to all the lights. Sounds like you will have a longgggg day out on the boat! Have a great time, and will be looking forward to your report and some pics.

Dave - when you went to Jacobsville Lighthouse, was the road paved? Last time I drove there, the road turned into a dirt road and made the drive a lot longer than it had to be. My son and I also found the Jacobsville lighthouse without the help of any directions. I was driving around and the next thing I knew, I was it the driveway of the lighthouse. We also drove down to the park to see the pier light.

I am looking forward to seeing some of the lights on the islands. I hope the weather is nice. I just bought a new raincoat, so it now can be sunny, but I will be prepared.

Suzanne,

As I remember, the road was paved. Not too far from town. We also found the pier light. To me, some of the most fun when lighthousing is finding those lights that are not on the maps, where you need to do a little "seat of the pants" navigating...

When we visited Copper Harbor a major thunderstorm came up. Rather than keep everyone at the light, they required all the visitors to get back in the boat and head back to the docks in the major rain and lightening (seemed not the brightest thing to do.) Unfortunately, they had the upper hand as it was a long swim back.

In just a few hours I will be on my way to Lake Superior and the Keweenaw peninsula! I will be back in 5-6 days.

Safe journey, Suzanne and Rick -- and as they say in Deutchland:

The boat cruise around the Keweenaw peninsula was fantastic!!! The captain of the boat was a lighthouse lover's and photographer's friend. He got as close as possible to every lighthouse, stayed put while everyone got their pictures taken, then moved to another spot for photos from a different angle! We couldn't have asked for more. They fed us lunch and dinner aboard the boat. We left at 9:30 a.m. and got back at 8:00 p.m., only two hours later than scheduled. Its a good thing the captain wasn't trying to stay on time. We had great weather...sunny and warm with cool breezes while on Lake Superior.

This boatline is thinking of adding a lighthouse cruise around Isle Royale in the future. I was sure to add my name and address to their contact list.

We also went on a tour of Sand Hills Lighthouse. It is now a bed and breakfast. It was very interesting to hear the story of how this couple restored the lighthouse and turned it into a bed and breakfast. They put a great deal of money and hard work into it. It turned out beautifully. It was a labor of love for them and they saved the lighthouse from being destroyed by the previous owner who was only interested in the lakefront property. We got to see every room in the lighthouse including the attic, climbed the tower and walked outside the lantern room.

Oh yes, we talked to a local NBC news reporter who was doing a story on the Keweenaw Lighthouse Celebration. We ran into him at Eagle Harbor Light and Sand Hills Light. This time we were able to see the news story that evening.
