Sue and I are on the way to Lighthouses and a Lori Line Concert in Door County.. The first stop was to a light that we have managed to miss seeing all of these years. It is well worth the stop, they have done a fantastic job of restoration on the lighthouse located in Northern Milwaukee!

North Point Lighthouse..

I shot many more images just in case Harry might need them some day in the future..

It is in a great setting with a park on the North and South and Lake Michigan on the East. Across the street on the West are some very beautiful grand old homes so it can been seen just by driving down the road in front of it framed by huge trees..

This is one that Harbour Lights needs to do as an LE!!

We did a swing by this private aid to navigation at Kevich, WI

Next up we checked into our hotel in Port Washington. The Holiday Inn had a welcome sign in the lobby saying that Paul Brady was today's Priority Club winner, that included a free room upgrade that included this view and a free breakfast buffet at their restaurant tomorrow morning.. The streaking on the left is from shooting through the window and the screen.

Shot the next two images on the walk over to supper..

Shot this from our table, you might see the pier light in the middle of the image.

My supper was the Captains platter.. It was very good!

Shot this on on the way back to the Hotel, just missed the sun going off of the light but I really liked the look of the water rippling behind the boat..

Wow - Thanks for taking us along. Last time I saw North Point, it was in a shambles and overgrown by vines and trees. Something to be proud of now!

Great photos! I did the Door County tour and south to Milwaukee several years ago. Your pictures of the harbor were beautiful as was the dinner plate... Yum. I also found that home at Kevich, WI. It was a little tricky as I recall.

Your pictures brought back some great memories. Thanks!

Lorie Line Concert

This is what brought this whole trip about, since Lorie wasn't playing Indy on this tour we went to Fish Creek Wisconsin, her closest stop to us on her tour..

Lorie's husband Tim used my camera to shoot Lori and Sue..

This was so i could be in the next picture with Sue and Lorie. By the way, Tim really liked my camera!

Great pictures Paul and the food must have been great. There is one question though. Who is Lori Line? I have never heard of her or I lead a sheltered life. She looks a lot like Krystal Gale, only with much shorter hair.

She is a fantastic pianist and arranger for her Pop Orchestra, here's her website. She is from the Midwest but she does tour the rest of the country.. This was as close as she as been to indianapolis for a couple of years, so we combined the trip to hear her play with vising a lot of lighthouses. We have and will managed to sneak in a couple of new ones that we hadn't been to before. We really enjoy playing her CD's in the car when we travel on our lighthouse trips and have for several years!

Today has at least so far, end up being Whitefish Point Lighthouse image day. We awoke to pouring rain this morning in Munising, MI. Since it was very fogy and pouring down rain, we canceled boat tour tickets and headed on over to Paradise, MI where we are staying tonight and it paid off as just as we finished lunc in Paradise it finally stopped raining. By the time we got up to Whitefish point the clouds parted and we got about an hour of sunshine.

Sue doing a little cranberry shopping, about 2 miles South of Whitefish Point..

This image and the next one are made from our balcony off our room .. I wish there was a way to add the sound of the waves hitting the shore.

Out there some where lies the Edmund Fitzgerald..

We asked the lady at the front desk where the best place to eat supper was since there aren't many places open in Paradise, MI. She recommended that we go to the Tahquamenon Falls and go to a Brew Pub and Restaurant at the Upper Falls. Boy was she correct, it was excellent!!

We hadn't planned on seeing the Falls this trip since it was raining off and on but since we needed to eat.

We stopped at the Lower Falls first.. The first three images are shot at the Lower Falls..

Then the Upper Falls..

I was once in Paradise with howling winds and waves crashing against the shore. The hotel lost power for 2.5 hours. The next morning was sunny skies and calm waters.

I have yet to visit the waterfalls there.

First we back tracked a bit and went to Seul Choix Point Lighthouse..

It took me half of my lifetime to pronounce the name correctly.

It has been a favorite lighthouse of mine before I ever visited it..

I used to love the birdhouse that was a replica of the lighthouse. Over the years the birdhouse fell into to disrepair and finally it was gone.

Sue was able to find a few gifts for our grand-daughters in their gift shop.

It was very overcast the whole time we were there, but at least it wasn't raining all day..

The first stop on the way to St. Ignace was a roadside vista where you can see White Shoal Lighthouse.

The next stop was a vista where you can see St Helena Lighthouse

Good stuff Paul. Patti and I made a similar trip several years back (before kids) and followed almost the same path as you and Sue have. Hope the weather keeps holding out for you!

Our internet connection in our Hotel last night crashed on me, so I have a little catch up to do.. There's good news and bad news. The bad news is we had considerable cloud cover and rain the past two days, the good news is I don't have a lot of catching up to do since I didn't stop at all the lights in the rain down the coast of Lake Michigan.

This is about our 6th lighthousing trip to both Door County and the U. P., many more through Michigan since 1996 AHLC (after Harbour Lights collecting), a few more before then. We love the U. P. even if it's raining like this trip, it is vary relaxing up there.

July 1, 2009

I love crossing this bridge, we recently wacthed a Dirty Jobs episode on both painting inside the support legs, for the lack of the correct term, and changing a bulb at the very top, too cool!!

I actually found a new spot to shoot Old Mac from!!

McGulpin Lighthouse has a new look and I got some new looks of the lighthouse..

First a flower for Mombo!

This is fantastic news!!

This is a real new look at the front of the lighthouse. You can not only walk completely around the light now but on the weekends you can go in the lighthouse.

This is a whole lot better than sneaking a picture if the gate happened to be left open as in the past..

Little Traverse Bay Lighthouse, which is located at the end of a gated community. You can get this glimpse of it from Beach St in Harbor Springs, which is worth the drive down just to see all of the majestic old homes along the shore ..

Harbor Springs History Museum, which opened this past December after some great restoration work..

A quick shot of Charlevoix Pier Light and then the sky's opened up, it started pouring. Fortunately we had seen all of the next lights on the route to our hotel for the night..

Our first stop of the day was at the White River Lighthouse at Whitehall, MI..

Of we were still greeted with overcast and white skies..

The lighthouse has two very nice and friendly dogs..

As we were leaving Sue pointed out the woodpecker on the bird feeder..

After we left the White River Lighthouse it started raining again so we just headed on the 6 hour drive home, but we did stop at the Old Michigan City Lighthouse after the sun came out as we crossed the state-line back into Indiana..

It looks like our club's hard work every Spring and Fall is paying off, big time..

They have added a banner to announce that they have added new Summer hours, they are open at 10:00AM for the Summer instead of 1:00PM.

BTW We are back home again in Indiana! Our wonderful (in spite of the rain) trip is over, I hope you enjoyed going along!

OMC looks fantastic - you'll have to post some pre-club photos too. You guys have really done a great job -- and deserve recognition from the City, County and State for all the hard work you've done on behalf of "your" lighthouse.

And thanks for taking us along. Loved the lighthouses, loved the flowers, loved the meals. But in that last one, looks like you were loading up on bad stuff and Sue was loading up on healthy stuff.

I love Reuben sandwiches and I have had them all over America. That one was one of, if not the best Reuben I have ever had!! The restaurant was located at the Marina in Harbor Springs, MI. Sue said her chicken salad with the fruit was great also.. It was our best meal of the trip and we had some great food on the trip.

I need to add that being with Sue on our first trip since retiring was the best thing about the whole trip. Up until now we have gone on vacation together but this was our first retired trip together and it was very nice!

You probably had a little better weather than we did in the U.P. but we managed to have a great trip any way plus we managed to get in a couple of lighthouses that we hadn't seen before. It was a real bonus going to McGulpin and being able to actually go on the property and see the work they have already done in restoring the lighthouse.

I sneaked through the open gate for this shot of the lighthouse in October of 2005.

It looks a lot better with a lantern-room!

Fabulous photos as usual. It doesn't matter what the subject, the photography is a thing of beauty!

Great news about McGulpin lighthouse. Maybe if we ever get back there to do the Bridge Walk we'll be sure to tour the lighthouse.

Now that I am back off the road and have a little time while the remodeling gets restarted, I thought I would give the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society a plug. They have done a wonderful job of restoring the old city hall building to become their new, as in recently opened, Harbor Springs History Museum . Sue and I thought is looked like a brand new building when we walked up to it. Mary Cummings, HSAHS Archivist, whom I had communicated with via email before our trip, explained that the old building had been covered with stucco and when they removed it they found almost perfectly preserved wood.

Since the Little Traverse Lighthouse is at the wrong end of a gated community and, Sue and I could never make it on the one day that it is open to the public every couple of years, we went in search of at least a glimpse of the light from across the harbor. What we found was that on Beach Street I could get a very long lens shot of at least part of the light. What we also found was a neighborhood of the most beautiful, grandest old homes we have ever seen. I am not posting an image because unlike the lighthouse these are also private homes. You will just have to go to Harbor Springs and drive down Beach St., it is well worth the trip! And while you are there be sure and stop by the Museum and say hi to Mary. Sue and I joined as members of their society before the trip and after seeing the Museum in person I am very glad that we did to help support their work.

BTW as I stated earlier, they also have one of the best Reuben's I have ever eaten at Stafford's Pier Restaurant at the Marina in Harbor Springs.

You may have been in the UP at the same time that I was there! Perhaps we crossed paths! I believe I was there from June 22nd to June 25th.

It is truly odd that a lighthouse enthusiast such as myself would live in one of the only 3 states east of the Mississippi that does not have a lighthouse. Go figure. :p
