My husband and I spent extended weekends in Bayfield, Wisconsin in August and again last weekend to visit the Apostle Island Lighthouses. We have now seen 7 of the 8 lighthouses.
(I'm getting a lot of dust when I scan my negatives and slides. So, I gave up and scanned my photos instead. I also cannot seem to get one photo to completely display when I preview this. Therefore, I chose an alternative.)
Sand Island Lighthouse
In August we walked two miles to see Sand Island. It was a beautiful day (warmer than expected and no deer flies).
Raspberry Island
On the way back from Sand Island, we stopped at Raspberry Island and spent about 20 minutes there.
Devil's Island Lighthouse
On August 9 we did the Grand Tour, which takes you by 19 of the 22 islands but only 2 lighthouses. Though you cannot tell from this photo, the water was rough out by Devil's Island, and it was hard to take pictures. The sea caves are beautiful ~ this picture doesn't do them justice.
Devil's Island Lighthouse
We took the 5 non-stop lighthouse cruise on September 20 that was offered as part of the lighthouse celebration. It was my birthday...a significant one. I decided that I wanted to spend my day looking at lighthouses instead of partying. 20 years ago I never would have imagined that. A guy who was sitting behind me from North Carolina said that it was his birthday, too. We went by Devil's Island again on this tour.
New LaPointe Lighthouse on Long Island is another one we viewed on the 5 lighthouse cruise.
On Sunday we took a cruise to Michigan Island. This is a photo of the New Michigan Island lighthouse that was taken from Old Michigan Island. It was overcast and the water was rough during the landing. We were happy that we were able to dock. It was raining lightly at the time I took this photo. The couple that gave the tours was fantastic. It was their last tour for the seaon, and they were leaving the following day. They lived their during the summer without electricity.
This is a photo of Old Michigan Island that was taken from the top of New Michigan Island.
On Monday, September 22 we were scheduled to visit Devil's Island. The day started cloudy. However, it cleared up, and I was excited to see this light up close. Unfortunately the swells were 3 - 5 feet high, and they canceled the tour. Well, it gives me something to look forward to next year.
