Next week I will be traveling up the east coast of lake Michigan on my way to Canada. The problem is that the group I am going with said that I can't visit every lighthouse (Too big a hurry to get there and they don't want to be stopping every hour).

So as you can see, I need to choose the ones that are easily accessible, very impressive to keep the group interested and those that offer good photo opportunity. I have visited all lights up to Holland so that limits the quest from Holland to Mackinac. The map I have shows the approx. location of the lights but doesn't tell which town(s) they are in or near. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Also does anyone know of any lights between Sault St. Marie, Canada east to Manitoulin Island, Canada. that are accessible from Hwy 17?

I would say you are going with the wrong group. Not stopping at every lighthouse on the way, that's unheard of!!

Hey Digger,

I visited Little & Big Sable lights, as well as Ludington Pier Light about a year ago.
Little Sable Point is accessable by car but some distance from the major highways, about 10 miles total from US-31. Big Sable Point is approx. 10 miles from the junction of US-31 and US-10, then a 1.5 mile hike each direction. It takes some time to get to (unless you walk fast). Ludington Pier is easily accessable by car, and right off US-10.

If there is time, I highly suggest seeing both Big & Little Sable lights. IMO they are well worth the trip.

Good Luck!

-Todd

Digger you have to get one or both of the following books. Michigan Lighthouses by Penrose,($14.95) and /or Great Lakes Lighthouses American & Canadian by Wes Oleszewski. ($16.95). they include directions and photos. I use them both.
