Another Stolen Weekend

Another outstanding weekend and opportunity to visit East End Long Island Lighthouses.
This time, Wildbird invited me to join a Hofstra University crew on a small boat out of Orient by the Sea. The Captain was Bob Douglas of Douglas Marine who not only supplied us with transportation but also some good stories about the area lighthouses since he‘s lived in the area all his life. The Hofstra students (Denise and staff) are doing a project for college credit and hope to produce this documentary for PBS.
We shipped out of Orient at 8:30 am, and headed for our farthest point North Dumpling Lighthouse. The day was mostly sunny and every time we arrived at a LH. The lighting seemed to be perfect and sometimes spectacular!
We then worked our way back to Race Rock, Little Gull, Plum Island, Orient Point, Ruins of Gardiners Island Lighthouse and the Fort, Cedar Island and Long Beach Bar ‘Bug Light’- "a 5 hour tour".
I did something different today, and took some digital video besides my stills, so I’m really looking forward to playing back my 42 minutes of video and reliving the trip tonight. That will also be good for cold winter evenings.
That’s three outrageous weekends in a row on Long Island that I never expected at this time of year! Four new lighthouses I had never seen; views from up close and in front of lighthouses for a reflecting waterview. Rod would love these. The only thing missing was ‘Lighthouse Dude’ who was Christmas shopping????

The day this photo was taken the water was like glass and there was no wind. Notice how active the water is around the point! Compare it to the water around the other LHs in the other pics, that were taken on the same day.

Nice pictures Bob. Wouldn't it be nice to make a trip like that and go inside all the lights?
I too would like to see HL make a Race Rock piece as well as Cedar Island. Here are a couple of old postcards of Cedar Island.

You Bet Mike! That's next on my list of 'permissions' to do it list!
Those postcards of Cedar Island are GREAT! I just obtained both of them in the past two months after much bidding on ebay.

'Scoop' Scroope, our intrepid reporter of 'Lighthousing on Long Island' sent me a video of his day's expedition. What a great gift (or did you want it back?). Now I really miss living anywhere near a lighthouse. I'm jealous of those who have so many in such close proximity!!!

There is something about being able to see a lighthouse as the sun rises or sets that has a calming effect on one's soul.

I'm hoping to make it to Long Island this Spring on business and plan on tacking on several days to view the lights on Long Island Sound and on the Atlantic Shore.

Thanks again for the photos above (great shots!) and the video, Bob.

Great pics Bob! I could really see a Race Rock addition to HL. I would also enjoy Plum Island. The shoreline of Plum Island looks like it has been chopped away over the years, or has it always been like that?

You're right Dave, Plum Island is in Big Trouble - check out 216.46.163.97/forums/Forum5/HTML/000160.html in the Lighthouse section - especially my December 14th post which shows the most recent and dramatic photos of Plum Island's perilous situation.

And how anyone can help Save Plum Island!

Pardon the late commentary, Bob, but I haven't stopped by here in probably more than a month. Busy, busy busy...

Great shots of the lights. It sure was a great day to be on the water. It was nice to be in a small (30') boat. You can get so much closer that way.

I don't believe Mr. Scroope mentioned the seals on the south side of Great Gull Island. There were hundreds of them. Bob Douglass pulled up by them and let us get a look at them.
