I will be in Hilton Head mid March and would like to visit this light. Web sites have given me conflicting information on visiting this light. Has anyone visited Hilton Head Rear Range Light lately, if so what are the procedures to visit the light? Art confused

Art,

Stan and I were there in November of 2005 and were allowed to take photos of the lighthouse. It's located in a gated community and we had to get the okay from the guardhouse security staff to get onto the site--Arthur Hills Golf Course at Palmetto Dunes Resort. Memory indicates it is not well-marked, but both the 5th and 15th greens are adjacent to its location. Ask the guard to direct you to its general location.

The front range light was destroyed, but its brick oil house and a cistern that survived are located next to the rear range light.

Sandy

We were there in 2005 also

Although both the lady at the condo units and the guide for the museum tour said that we could not get in to see it, we were able to visit it by going to Palmetto Dunes and requesting a pass. You can drive up to the guard house - you don't have to get out and go in. The guard will give you directions - they are quite used to people asking.

There was an osprey or eagle nest on the top. I only got a photo of the wing

I was at the lighthouse in March 2007.

Here's the link to the report I made here on the forums-

It is accessible. When you enter Palmetto Dunes, you will drive about a mile. You will come to a traffic circle. Stay to the right, and don't get into the circle. You will come to a guard shack. Tell them that you want to see the lighthouse, and they will give you a pass and directions.
