CATHEDRAL OF THE TRANSFIGURATION ON KIZHI ISLAND WITHIN LAKE ONEGA

This Church has 22 domes and is made entirely of wood without using any nails. Is part of an open air museum containing numerous all-wooden buildings in the characteristic design of northern Russia. This is a World Heritage site and is administered by the United Nations (UNESCO). This is the farthest north our trip took us and it would be somewhat further north than Anchorage, Alaska. The temperature was about 90 deg. F!!

SEVERAL OF THE DOMES ATOP THE SUMMER PALACE OF CATHERINE THE GREAT AT THE TOWN OF PUSHKIN (about 15 km south of St. Petersburg)

CAROL & DAN (ELMER) OUTSIDE CATHERINE’S PALACE

Thought about buying the place but decided it would be too far to drive to Indy for a HLC meeting!! :p eek

Beautiful and impressive. About when were these buildings built?

Were you on a guided tour?

Dan,

Great pictures! thanks for sharing them with us.

What's most amazing is that these structures made it through the Communist Regime and WW II.

Looks like a great trip.

I felt like I was on the tour with you. What fabulous pictures!! I believe that Russia has some of the most beautiful architecture in the world and in a very special way their churches. Thanks for sharing them with us.

For some reason, Elmer's pictures are not opening in Netscape. They will open with IE and only seem to be this series of pictures. Everyone else's pictures will open with Netscape. Must be Netscape doesn't like Russian pictures smile

I not only have Netscape issues with the images but they won't open in Explorer on my Mac, everybody else's are fine..

I even tried copy and paste of Dan's image info and it still wouldn't appear..

I can see them fine on Sue's PC using Explorer but not when using Netscape..

Onward to The Land of the Midnight Sun!

To answer some of the questions posed:

* Regarding the age of the buildings:
* Most of the Kremlin & Churches within date
back to the late 15th Century
* Cathedral of the Intercession dates back to
the middle of the 16 th Century
* St. Petersburg is newer - it was celebrating
it's 300th anniversary this year
* Peterhof construction began in 1710
* Catherine's Palace is 18th Century vintage

* The Russians have done an outstanding job of
restoration! We saw numerous photos of the
damage many of these buiding sustained during
Nazi occupation and the wonderful job they've
done bringing things back!

* Things were remarkably clean in the Rusian
cities .. MUCH cleaner than U.S. cities! We saw
a lot of people with shovels and brooms
sweeping the streets .. didn't get the feeling
they were employed to do this!?

* Our trip included city tours of Moscow, Uglich,
Kostroma, Yaroslavl, and St. Petersburg. We
signed up for optional tours of Peterhof,
Catherine's Palace & a canal cruise in St.
Petersburg. Each city tour had a local person
for a tour guide.

* I recommend Viking River Cruises wholeheartedly
They did a good job!!
