Thinking of going up there on Wednesday. Now that I actually live in Manhattan, I've decided to finish off the lighthouses I'm missing in the area and finally take the walk to the Little Red Lighthouse.

There's not much on the Internet or the CF about it, though. All I really know is that it's a slightly sketchy journey. I figure I can get a friend to come with, somehow.

Any tips or experiences to share? Would love an idea of where I'm going (taking the subway, obviously), before heading up there.

Greg,

It's fairly easy to get to. You just walk over the footbridge over the West Side Highway near 181st St and Lafayette Place.

You then follow the signs walking down and go through the tunnel and shortly you will see the LH right below the bridge.

You will find it hard to believe that you are still in NYC- although the trash, urine, etc especially in the tunnel will help to remind you.

It's not the best place to go and don't go alone and do go during the day. Bring your cellphone as well.

I'm sorry if I seem alarmist but I was there a few years ago and I would not go back unless it was one of the days the LH is open- like it is sometimes-

Open to the public:
Scheduled tours offered spring through fall
by the New York City Urban Park Rangers.
For tour information, call (212) 304-2365

If you wait until 9-13 the annual festival is going on. You would even be able to get into the LH that day.

Last time I was there I got on the little beach to the left of the lighthouse. DONT DO IT. Rats.
I went on Sunday and there are people riding there bicycles and kids with parents roller skating. Not so bad. That was almost 2 years ago.

Okay, so it seems it is a sketch as I thought. Don't have anyone I know enough that's willing to be dragged to a lighthouse, so I'll wait a bit.

I called the aforementioned number today. Two tour dates soon to climb, according to the ranger. 13 Sept, which conflicts with the NELL cruise but is a normal, "low key" tour date, and 20 Sept, for the Little Red Lighthouse Festival (no conflicts, but apparently it's popular). Think I might do the latter, since the festivities would hopefully "clean up" the area.

Plans are to see it on the NELL trip, time permitting, too, so at the least I'll get pictures from the water.

I've meant to go to the festival for years anyway, but always forget it at the last minute. This year, I'm determined. Even if it means being there at 11 AM to get a ticket, which means I want to get there 10:30...need to have the car parked by 10...leave the garage by 9:30...and get up around 9. On a Saturday.

Compared to some of the other pharological sacrifices I've made, not that bad.

BTW --- also met a girl here at school who lives down the street from Sands Point Light on Long Island. Under the impression that's hard to get close to on land, so thinking I need to become better friends with her.

I was thinking about Nell and Sept 13 but I think with Hannah and Ike the waters will be BAAAAAAAAAAD.
