Every year we go up to Bois Blanc Island in Lake Huron for at least a long weekend of camping. Last summer we were fortunate enough to have a full week in a cabin out on the west end, so we took our kayaks - the weather was so nice that we got to cross over to Round Island and Mackinac Island several times. On a particularly calm day I took my daughter over to see the light on Round (she is already a great fan of lighthouses!) Here are links to some of my favorite pics from that trip: Heading out: Where we landed: Self portrait w/snoozer after the hike: Jr. cheesing by the lighthouse: Freighter (John G. Munson) passing by as we left: ...this one is from another day that I was solo on freighter safari (American Valor): Enjoy! Steve

Nice pics, Reef Raider. I had to do the refresh thing to get to see your pictures. Also the size is too large to be viewed all at once. Reduce the size of your pics to around 570 pixels on one side and then the whole pice can be viewed without using the slide bars. Thanks for sharing your photos with us. I hope there will be more photos in the future for us to see. Bob

Aha! I got past my online A.D.D. long enough to figure out what I was doing wrong with the picture links. Enjoy!

That's a beautiful lighthouse! I'll get there eventually. Is the tower open?
This space for rent. Inquire within.

No - it's locked up pretty good and from the looks of it has been for some time. I haven't heard of any tours, though it wouldn't surprise me if they do open it from time to time, being so prominent and close to Mackinac Island. I believe it is administered by Hiawatha National Forest.

Great closeup of the plaque, Steve. I find those types of photos interesting with their very brief history listed. I think more photos of lighthouse plaques should be posted. Bob

Great photos! I really like the picture with the Munson...shows how close these huge freighters pass to the lighthouse. Thanks for sharing!

It is pretty impressive to sit out there with them & watch them go by. Here are a couple shots from a different perspective... H. Lee White & Lake Michigan Close up of the Lake Michigan

Nice photos. That last one of the two freighters passing will show those not familiar with the Lake Carriers how high they ride when empty vs. how low when carrying a load.

The freighter in the last photo sure makes Round Island Light look small. Bob

I still feel the "WOW" factor every time I get to see one up close and personal! You can tell someone how huge they are, show them photos or video, but they can't comprehend until they actually get to meet one in real life. You can see a 600-800 footer at Duluth or the Soo and think-that's big. Then you see a 1000 footer and it's- oh my gosh! When you see a 1000 footer passing along side an 800 footer and the smaller ship disappears completely... that's a real reality check!!!!
