Day Three
We have lighthouses!! I got on line at the Two Harbors Lighthouse and got the images posted..

Today was a Great Day of Lighthousing!!


We started off for a day traveling from Iron Wood MI to Two Harbors MN by swinging by Wisconsin Point Lighthouse. On the way, we missed a turn and in less than 1/4 miles, there was a mother bear and her two cubs. Sue said later this made our vacation complete. They ran into the woods, so we turned around and they came back out again, but quickly ran back into the woods.


We made a quick stop at Wisconsin Point Light...I hope that Harbour Lights will make this light soon!


Upon arriving at Two Harbors, I shot a few pictures...


A quick shot of the pier light and then off to Split Rock Lighthouse...


We toured the fog building and the lighthouse grounds first...

We climbed the tower at Split Rock and got this look of the magnificant 3rd order fresnel, both inside and outside of the lens....


We drove down to the picnic grounds of the state park and went out on the rocks to get the wide panarama...this is the same shot I shot in 1997 with snow on the ground.


When I get home I will be interested in seeing whether I used the same trees in the shot, and to see if they have grown


In the tradition of "moving my feet" I drove them down to another location...I walked down from the campgrounds to the shore and found this angle that I like very much!


This is Gooseberry Falls, just down the road from Split Rock Lighthouse, for a change of pace.


This shot was taken from downtown Two Harbors as we drove back to Two Harbors Lighthouse, where we will spend the next 2 nights at this bed and breakfast.

As we entered the back gate to the lighthouse, I saw the moon next to the tower


Then I hurried over to get this shot as the sun set.

You saw BEAR! I'm so JEALOUS!!! Great shots! I've not been past Apostle Islands on Lake Superior. Someday soon! Thanks again for sharing!

Beautiful Paul. John and I are going to Two harbors and Split Rock on Saturday before we drive over to Houghton. I love the pictures of Split Rock from the distance. What road do you take to get those views?

Nice photos! I've only visited Split Rock in the fall and winter. So, it's great to see summer shots. Did you take the waterfall photo at Gooseberry Falls?

I have to know where you saw the bears! Is that the road to Wisconsin Point Light (Superior South Breakwater)? That's so cool. When I was a child, I saw bears in the wild in northern Wisconsin a few times. My husband hasn't seen a bear in the wild. I keep hoping with every trip up north that we'll see some.

Lorie, in case Paul doesn't have a chance to respond before you leave, the photos of Split Rock look like they were taken within the park. There are just a few places to park. Get a map when you enter the park. If you park at the lot near Little Two Harbors, it's just a short walk to photograph the lighthouse from where Paul did.

Forever. Well it will just seem like it.

If the math in my head works, its just about 375 miles, I've made the Duluth to Houghton trip about a dozen times (unfortunately, all in the winter).

Should be about 6.5 hours plus the time change.

I used two different locations in the State Park below.. The first you go through a picnic area (the first place you can turn left after going down the hill) and find on of the paths out to the rocks... The second location is through the camp grounds at the end of the road.. You park in the lot and find a path that heads towards the lake and some campsites.. You will find a gravel road that head back towards the lighthouse and down to the edge of the lake..

Carol...I printed a mapquest from Split Rock lighthouse to Ontonagon, MI and from Ontonagon to Houghton. I stopped it at Ontonagon because I thought that we would try to stop at the lighthouse there before continuing to Houghton.

This is the mapquest results:
Split Rock to Ontonagon---216.77 miles, 4 hours, 40 minutes

Ontonagon to Houghton---51.52 miles, 1 hour, 13 minutes

Total miles: 268.29
Total time: 5 hours, 53 minutes

Lori, go to the lighthouse at Split Rock before you go to the park for the other shots... When you pay admission at the lighthouse they will give you a day pass for the park otherwise you will pay twice!
