I'm a bit slow in posting these pics from our cruise to Western Europe in August. John and I have had a lot going on the past 2 months... with the birth of our second grandson and John working in Salt Lake while I live in St. George and trying to commute 300 miles between our two houses. The cruise we were on left out of Southhampton, England and ended in Rome. We cruised along the western coast of Europe with stops in France, Spain, Portugal, Gibralter, and Italy. These are a few pics of lighthouses that we saw along the way. We docked in Cherbourg, France and I wanted to go see the Gatteville Lighthouse. This lighthouse was built in 1835 with a granite tower. It is the 3rd tallest stone lighthouse in the world at 72m or 236ft. It has 365 steps to the gallery. It survived WWII and in 1944 was one of the first lighthouses of Western Europe to be re-lit. The next pictures come from out stop in Lisbon, Portugal. Our first stop was at Cabo da Roca. This lighthouse was built in 1772 with a 3rd order Fresnel lens. It is located on the western most point of the Eurasian continent. The fog kept rolling in and out while we were there. This lighthouse is Cabo Raso. It was built in 1915 and located at the northwestern end of the bight of Lisbon. It was taken from the bus window so it's not the best.

Continuing on with the Lisbon area...we passed by the Guia or Cascais lighthouse. This lighthouse was built in 1761 and is made from stone and white tiles. It is the landfall light for ships arriving in Lisbon. Again, this pic was also taken quickly from the bus window so I apologize for the poor quality. Our next stop is at the Belem Tower on the Tagus River in Lisbon. It was completed in 1520 as part of fortifications protecting Lisbon. In 1886 a skeletal lighthouse was built in front of the tower. It was later removed. Belem Tower from the water. This lighthouse is on the waterfront close to the Belem Tower. I'm not sure if this was the original lighthouse that was moved from the tower. I couldn't find any information about it. We passed this lighthouse as we were leaving the Port of Lisbon. It is the Bugio lighthouse and is located on a small island in the center of the entrance to the Tagus River.

Another stop was Gibralter, UK. The lighthouse is Europa Point. It was built in 1841 and is located on the southern tip of the Gibralter peninsula. A view of the "Rock". The lighthouse is on the right side of the photo. I picked this cruise because it stopped in new places that I hadn't visited before in Europe. This stop is Cartagena, Spain. There are two harbor entrance lights. They were both built in 1892. The red lighthouse is Cartagena Dique de la Navidad. The green lighthouse is Cartagena Dique de la Curra.

Loved your photos of the lighthouses of Lisbon. You did a great job of showing them all.
I was in Lisbon 40+ years ago, but of course at that time, I wasn't thinking about lighthouses....
I just remember the city as very pretty.
Thanks for your photos!

It's always nice to see photos of lighthouses- especially ones that the odds are i'll never see in person.

Well worth the wait Lorie! That Belem Tower is awesome. It appears that there's another taller tower of some sort behind Europa Point? We you able to get into any of the lights?

Thanks for the pics. I'm always happy to see the super condition these European lighthouses are kept and why the USA lights aren't.

Thanks for the nice comments.
Sue, we did not go inside any of the lighthouses. I'm not sure if any of them are open to the public except Belem Tower.
The tower behind Europa Point is the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque. It was a gift from King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. It took 2 years to build and was completed in August 1997.
