I will be going to Myrtle Beach for 3 days and Hilton Head for 4 the first week of Oct. Doing Cape Lookut one day, Bald Head and Oak Island another. On the way to Hilton Head Im doing Georgetown and Charlesron(Sullivans Island). In Hilton Head Im doing Harbour Town,Hilton Head Rear Range,Hunting Island and Tybee. I want to do Sapelo Island and was given a couple of names to contact who live on the Island to take me to the lighthouse. Before I call these people has anyone done this. Anyone know how long it takes to get to Sapelo visitor center from Hilton. The public tour was canceled for hunting. mad I would also like to do Haig Point(Daufuskie Island) and need any info on the best tour to go with. If I missed anything or if you have good info on problems I will face please help.

You'll have to make reservations for the ferry to get to bald island. Just do a search for bald head lighthouse. You'll have to check with the coast gaurd to get on the grounds of Oak Island, but you can still see it. It is right next to the road. While you at it why don't you check out Sullivan's island and Morris island, in Charleston S.C. Sullivans is not far past Patriot's point and you can see morris island from the north end of folly beach. She's an ole lady but still pretty! I have the Harbour light's Artist Proof of Morris Island, "Then and Now" Good luck on you journey and have a safe trip!

Hilton Head Rear Range is on a golf course in a private community, I took me about a half hour to convince the security people to let me go in to photograph it, and after they finally agreed I had to sign a form of some sort saying I would not use the photo's commercially, I hope you have an easier time, and when you do find it, it is hidden in plain sight behind a few trees.

There is a marina at the end of the expressway (kind of under the bridge), near the hilton head lighthouse. We rented a boat and got pictures of Haig Point that way.

Hilton Head Range is at Palmetto Dunes. Just go to the Real Estate office in PDand they'll give you a temp pass. The security guard gave me a map, and said I could drive up on cart path sidewalk to park.
At Hilton Head, I went early in morning. I parked in the development on opposite side of marina on the 18th hole of golf course as well as in the shopping marina. There's a $5 fee if your not a guest.
Sullivan Island and Morris Island are at the end of beach residential community roads, and you may have to walk a little to see them.

Fran, the only way to get onto Sapelo is to be part of a tour or go as a "guest" of one of the permanent residents. A few years back the Pixie set us up on a private tour of the island and lighthouses. There weren't any scheduled tours the day we were going to be there. We went as a guest of the person who was going to give us the tour.

One thing I remember, you need to call at least 2 days before to reserve a ticket. You don't need to pay until you get there. The building for the tickets is close to the dock AND the boat did leave on time exactly.

We did the whole tour and the only bad thing was I wanted to spend more time at the lighthouse. We did get to climb up to the trap door of the lantern room. There is a day just for the lighthouse tour, but I don't think it is as often.

I did the Sapelo Island tour last year. Went to the ferry without a reservation and boarded the ship. The tour was very interesting. You get to see the remains of the sugar plantation and the R.J.Reynolds homestead. The lighthouses were not part of the planned tour but I begged the tour guide to make an extra stop. And she did. If her friend selling pecan pie was on the tour, why can't the ligthhouses be on it. I really enjoyed the trip.
If the scheduled tours are cancelled for hunting you may have a problem.
