I managed to get into New Cape Henry and was allowed to climb the stairs to the first window. This was taken from the floor looking up. The floor of New Cape Henry. New Cape Henry. Old Cape Henry. If you look at the right side you can see some of the cracks. Old Cape Henry lantern room roof. New Cape Henry from the inside of Old Cape Henry. Old and New Cape Henry. To the left is the Harbor Pilot Control Tower, operated by the Maryland and Virginia Pilots Association.

Thanks Judy. Yes it is a real treat to get inside the ones closed to the public. It looks like it may be open to the public in the near future.

Nice special effects shots, Eric! I always like shots taken from interesting angles. Loved that first one! Because of the contrasting colors, it's easier to see the depth of the spiral than in most such pictures.

It looks like it may be open to the public in the near future. That's something to hope for Eric, but there are obstacles in the way. Because the VA Pilot's Asooc. is there as well may be a problem, so I have been told by some "insiders". I've been able to climb New Cape Henry twice, once because of society event's.

The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiques wants to open the lighthouse to the public. They currently own and run Old Cape Henry as well as some other historic places in Virginia.

This is one of the reasons why I hope that I can continue to make trips with lighthouse groups. We are given accessibility where the general public frequently is not. I've traveled on my own and could not influence anyone to let me into some places, whereas, the volunteers have come running when they know there is a group on the premises wanting to climb a tower, etc. It's a twofold reasoning, I think - more revenue for them and they also know that a bunch of preservationists will know how to "behave" and will appreciate the efforts of the local preservation groups.

Eric, looking at all of your photos brings me back to pour 2001 post reunion lighthouse trip when we saw many of the same lights. Thanks for the memory jog. Mike

Beautiful pictures Eric. The spiral is very interesting. And the picture of the New Henry floor....very interesting tile work. Any history behind the pattern?
I've been to the Henry's twice, but never able to gain access to New. The folks at the old light are really great!

Good question Melody, but I don't know about the pattern.

Nice shots, Eric! Especially the perspective ones.
Do you happen to know what that basket on the floor of NCH is?

Greg, they use the basket to haul tool or parts for the light instead of carrying it up the steps.
