When was Fort Wadsworth restored and does anyone have photos of what it looks like now?

My photos from a visit a couple of years ago look pretty much like the pics from the links Mombo posted. Guess I'll have to take a look and see how/if things have improved since I was last there in May. So far my schedule is open so that I can attend the event, lets hope it stays that way.

Well, the rain held off for today's event! It was foggy/hazy for most of the day but the sun did sneek out from behind the clouds for a little while this afternoon.

This was the view for most of the day.

After the opening ceremonies including the Color Guard, music by a local chorus and thank yous to the volunteers who have worked on restoring the lighthouse, attendees were invited to take a tour of the fort and head up top to see the lighthouse close up. Crafts and face painting were available for kids and all were given the option of enjoying a piece of birthday cake. A postal first day cancellation was available as well.

Lighthouse author Jim Crowley thanking volunteers for their restoration work.

A couple of fire boats were on hand to add to the days festivites.

Here is the view once you climbed to the top of the fort.

A shuttle bus was on hand to get visitors to and from the lighthouse. However the walk was manageable.
I'll have more photos to add later.

Looks good Shirin and that photo with the fire boat is super! Glad you were able to make this event and thanks for sharing with us. Are there plans to put a light back into the lantern room?

Thanks for sharing, Shirin. Much as it pains me, I agree with Mombo - the fireboat picture is great.

I agree the picture with the lighthouse and fire boat is awesome eek Terry & I were in San Diego to watch the USS Abraham Lincoln come into port. They had about 3 of those fire boats coming in ahead of them. It was so great to see those sailors in their "whites" standing all around the ship. Happy to see them but it brought a tear to my eye.

That's a 'cover photo' Shirin. Better submit that one to Lighthouse Digest, if you haven't already.

Shirin,

Thanks for the great pictures and report.

I was hoping to get there but a search for identification papers got in the way.

I agree Shirin, it sure would be a great cover photo. Especially if we could get the Digest to put the mailing label on the back side of the magazine! But then HL probably wouldn't like that label on their full page ad!

Wow, Dennis! Is NY getting that tough on letting Jersey folks in that you have to now carry ID papers with you???????? Or is it so that you can get back into NJ after visiting NY????????

Dave,

No, it's not quite that bad yet, although it could explain why it takes so long to get over the bridges and throught the tunnels.

Actually, i was trying to find identification papers for my Mother to get her Passport renewed for a Cruise to Alaska/ Canada she will be going on.

She can't find her old expired Pasport or her Naturalization Papers (she was born in Canada) and they won't accept the copy (an unofficial photocopy) she has in Florida with her.

According to her "they are in a brown envelope on the dresser". We haven't found which dresser yet.

There is no Canadian birth Record so we can't do that and we are geting conflicting answers as to what we can do by the clerks Offices in NJ and FL.

I'm going to try and take care of it tomorrow- hopefully. Planning the rest of the trip was a piece of cake compared to this simple task- renewing a passport

Thanks for being there so all of us could get an idea of the festivites. All the photos are great, expecially the fireboat one.
