I know this is short notice, but I figured I'd ask anyway. My wife and I are taking a trip to Savannah and Tybee Island this weekend. This will be the first time I've been to a lighthouse in person, and I'm really excited about the trip.
I was wondering if anyone has a list of "must see" things while in the area. A list of good eating places may also help.
Thanks for any input.

Naders, I don't know about places to eat, but you sure picked a good one to be your first! Hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip. If you have time, I would suggest seeing Fort Pulaski. It's a great Civil War fort and it's on the way out to the lighthouse!

Randy,
Thanks for the tip. We'll be sure to stop and visit the fort while we're out there. We've also decided we may try to make a trip down to St Simons to see the lighthouse down there. Can't wait.

We just got back from a trip down that way. As you go over the bridge to Tybee Island look to your left and you will see a lone lighthouse abandoned. It is called Cockspur Island. Tybee Lighthouse is a great climb and so is St Simons. When we were there they we doing some painting on the keepers house outside at both lights. Have a great trip and have fun climbing both Tybee and St Simons.
Savannah is a great town to see by the trolley that they run because unless you could spend some time there it would be confusing to drive in.

Here's a thread you should check out. http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/forums/Forum15/HTML/000402.html Also, do a search in the Map Room there are probably others with more info. We had a great time in Charleston & Savannah. We got to St Simon's last October on the way to FL. Hope this helps. Dennis

I'd second that suggestion to take the CAT Shuttle.
You can take a 1 1/2 hr tour with Grayline or one of the other trolley companies then take the free shuttle back to where you want to spend some time.
It costs about $14 for the round trip tour and $21 for the tour you get on and off at will. The Cat Shuttle is free and you can get on and off at will (well at one of the 30 stops).
It runs about every 15-20 minutes.

I was just at Tybee last Thanksgiving with my nephew. He is still talking about the trip and how he loved it! The area is gorgeous. I would suggest driving around Savannah. Some of the homes are unbelievable. Nick also liked Ft. Pulaski where you can can a distant view of the Cockspur Island Lighthouse and Ft. Screven which is just across the street from the lighthouse. They have an interesting collection of Tybee Island history at Fort Screven. Also, the riverfront area in Savannah has a lot of great stores. I picked up my very first Harbour Lights in a store along the river that was just loaded with Harbour Lights on my first trip to Savannah. Hope you enjoy your trip.

All,
Thanks for all the great information. We're just getting ready to pack the car, drop the dog off at the kennel, and then head on off for the 6 hour drive. This is a trip we've been wanting to make for a while now, and we really can't wait to get away. Thanks again everyone.
