posted 12-19-99 01:09 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am looking for a vacation spot for my husband and I. I would love to see the lighthouses in Maine. I hear they are beautiful. I have found some Bed & Breakfast in parts but I know nothing of the area. Any sugestions? Thanks, Amber
Back toward the end of summer, St. John posted a list of vacations from, I believe, the Lighthouse Society. It listed a tour in Maine that included all expenses expect airfare and alchol. That might give you a start.

There are five lighthouses directly in the Portland area and quite a few others within an hours drive from there. a good B&B run by some people that are into lighthouses is The Elms in the Camden area. http://www.midcoast.com/~theelms/ If you have never been to Camden ,you need to. It is not too far from Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. Also Ken Black's lighthouse museum (Shore Village Museum}is in that area. This is a must for anyone interested in lighthouses. http://www.lighthouse.cc/shorevillage

Maine is the greatest place for lighthouse lovers. We started in southern Maine with the help of a Maine Lighthouse Map & Guide that we picked up at Lighthouse Depot in Wells. We had great fun following the directions and marking them off as we saw each lighthouse. So far we have vacationed in southern Maine and at Acadia. We have also been to Camden, which is not to be missed. In three marathon trips we have seen many lighthouses but Pemaquid remains our favorite. Camden is probably your best bet for a base of operations if you want to maximize the number of lighthouses you can see in a short time.

Here is a previous thread of a schedule we used for lighthouse hopping during the 1998 reunion vacation. It was a 10 1/2 day trip with a few days in Maine. May or may not help, but it may at least give you an idea of travel time between certain lights. 1998 New England trip
