At a rep event this past weekend it slipped out. An L.E. (?) for 2001 on the water, as in original position, not on land. Search another thread started on 7/24/00 for more clues . Guess which one it is.

At the HOTM signing in Buxton I asked Bill when they were going to do the other screwpile lighthouse on the Chesapeake, which is Hoopers Straight. His comment was " I think we'll have that one next year."

It was moved from it's original location to the Maratime Museum in St Micheals, MD in the '60's. It has been beautifully restored. The roof is now green but I have read that it was originally red.

It would fit the Rep's description of being done on the water, in it's original location, not on land where it is now located.

It would be a natural if the reunion is held in Baltimore.

Jim... Hooper's Strait would be a great addition to the HL lineup, as well as a wonderful reunion piece. IF the reunion were to take place in Baltimore, do you think we could persuade the powers to be to schedule it during crab season?

I believe the origional 1867 "Hooper" had a red roof but when it was replaced in either 1879 or 1880 I'm not sure whether the "newer" one ever had a red one or not. In any event, I hope that you're right and HL does produce a "Hooper LE" in 2001. It would be a great additon to the line.

The Rep. did state Hooper Strait Lighthouse will be done on the water for 2001 but did not say if it would be an L.E.

It would have to be produced as some sort of Limited Edition. It could not be produced as a GLOW before its release as an LE. The only other way it would be produced as a non-limited would be if it was issued as a Little Lighthouse of Mine.

Oh no, not another questionable roof color!
The blue one gets my vote! http://home.neo.lrun.com/rodsphotogallery/Lighthouses/Maryland/HTML/HooperStrait.html

Now remember when Seven Foot Knoll came out and folks were saying, it's nice but it would have been better if they had made it as it was out in the water? Who says HL doesn't listen to us? Must be a HL spy in our midst?

Sue... I agree with you. I like that color combination as well. How about that outdoor plumbing?!

If they listened to us that would mean the roof color will be the historically correct roof color. Or at least what it was when it was still over the water and not over land. I want it correct not necessarily artistically appealing.

I offer you the Hooper Straight Lighthouse roof and where I come from this isn't red or blue!

Ah, does that green mean it's copper?

I almost forgot, last Saturday I tried to ask Bill how they decide upon the time period to depict when producing a light. After asking me if I really thought he had the answers to all these questions I was asking him, he sort of indicated that for many lights they tried to pick a time in the life of a light when it had its greatest historical impact or words to that effect.

Sean... I agree with you and am sure we would all like the piece to have a "historically correct roof color." "Artistically appealing" or not, whatever HL decides will be perfectly fine with me. Photos can be deceiving at times.

Paul... according to the colors in your photo, do you think it has a copper roof? It has that tarnished, weathered copper look to it.

In any case, I can definitely see how one would think (including myself) that the color of the roof is somewhat of a light blue color. This in accordance with the picture in the website of Mombo's link. By the way Sue, thanks for the link!

It is most definitely a copper roof, which means when it was brand new it could appear a shade of red and as it ages go through a myriad of color changes. I will add some more images tonight, including some interior ones that show what a great job of restoration they did on the lighthouse, after the move.

I checked on the history of Hooper Strait in "Bay Beacons - Lighthouses of the Chesapeake". According to the author when it was built in 1879, to replace the one washed away in an 1877 storm, it had a tin roof which was painted red. According to the article the Chesapeake Maritime Museum had several regrets about how things were done when the lighthouse was moved to St Micheals. Among them are that the original solid cast-iron foundation had to be left in place, that the lighthouse is not sitting in water and that the new roof was made of copper and therefore cannot be painted.

I think that the green roof is very attractive but would have to agree that if HL makes the piece sitting in water it should be historicly correct with a red roof.
