I think the scrapbook is a great idea to present to Bill & Co. I think it would be even more personal if everyone created their own page (if they wanted too). You could set guidelines, ie, page size. We could mail our pages to the coordinator and they would put it all together. Since I do a lot of scrapbooking I would be willing to help others.

The scrapbook is a wonderful idea. To get the word out to non-forum collectors I suggest the following:
1. Have all the HL Collectors Clubs put together a Club page (one for each club).
2. Have the HL Dealers put the word out to their customers via a simple 2.75" x 8.5" leaflet that could be put in each order (I'm talking single sheet, you can get three from a regular sheet of paper). This leaflet would explain the rules for size of page and the address of who to send the page to so it is included in the book. OR the dealers could put up one simple 8.5" x 11" flyer in display.

I think the scrapbook is a great idea! I will be happy to include a page from me to the Younger family to say "thanks for memories". Keep us posted as to how, when, and where you want the page sent.

I am also familiar with scrapbooking. I will put the word out to club members via newsletter and at the Regional Event. I will even do a scrapbook page for the Milwaukee Regional Event. There are several web sites available to help you out with ideas. Just do a search on scrapbooking. It makes for some interesting pages rather than just paging through a photo album. The ladies in our church started a scrapbook session every other Sunday, unfortunatly I'm the only male there. I scrapbook our trips to various lighthouses, State Parks, and my hiking and wreck diving experiences. Visit your local craft or hobby shop even departments stores, Target, Walmart carry supplies for scrapbooking.

I'll repeat my request from the other thread -- does anyone have a few photos of scrapbook pages or can they scan something?

What are standard size pages? I think if we saw some examples, it would encourage others to put together their own pages that could be accumulated and bound and presented to the Youngers -- perhaps at the 2001 Family Reunion.

John, The scrapbook that I did of my lighthouse photos are 12" high x 11 1/2" wide (I had with me at Point Fermin and Atlanta events).
I'm trying to figure out how to attach a photo to a response. As soon as I get it figured out I'll post it here or I'll just attached a scanned page to an email.
Some other sizes that I have seen fit a standard 3-hole binder.

Here are a few examples of scrapbooks. The first example is from my book. It is smaller in page size than most books at 8 1/2 by 11. The book is also permanently bound.

The next example is from my wife Marla's book. Her is the more standard size of 12 by 12 and is bound by a three hole binder with removable pages. This page is not yet done as it has not been titled/lettered.

With scrapbooking, the possibilities are endless. I little imagination goes a long way.

Todd,

Very impressive pages!!!

I think that we could either send a page that you have prepared or you could send in a letter of testimony/thanks for the memories, etc. & a picture.
Are we still interested in this. If people send the letters I will format them into the book which I have purchased. Now I am waiting for the responses...

Tim H

After a month I thought we needed to revisit this thread.

Tim,
Set some specific parameters or guidelines and I think you will get responses. I like the idea, and think it would make a really unique and special gift from collectors to HL. When I say set the ground I mean:

- Can/should each do their own page(s) and submit for inclusion? If so, what specs such as page size and # of pages. (I would say front and back of one sheet of paper which is 2 pages in my book)

- If someone submits to you, what do we need to submit- how many pictures, a story, a thank you, what?

- What is the final date to submit and when/how do you plan to present to HL?

Like I said earlier, I think this is a great idea. We have not done scrapbooking before, but this might be the motivation to get started. Thanks for re-surfacing this thread and stirring the pot again.

Dave

Some possible themes:

[*]My Collection - photos of how you display, a paragraph on how you got started

[*]Meeting Bill - photos of a Harbour Lights signing event, people who were there, you and Bill, and a paragraph with date, place.

[*]Lighthousing - a lighthouse trip you took, hand-drawn map of the trip, lighthouse photos, special events (staying at a lighthouse, anniversary, etc.)

[*]Lighthouse history - old photos of a particular lighthouse, a write up of the history of it.

[*]HL Reunion - story of your attending either the 1997 or 1998 Reunion. Pictures, etc.

[*]Collector Clubs - how about it clubs? Seems like putting together a scrapbook from your club would be a great event for a future meeting.

[*]Thanks Harbour Lights! - your personal note to thank Harbour Lights for making such a fun product to collect, etc.

Tim has started the ball rolling. If you don't feel artistically inclined, contact Tim and he'll follow through. I'm sure others will also volunteer so we don't overwhelm Tim.

Those who can't draw for squat but can handle computer graphics can also produce pages.

The 12 x 12" format seems to be the standard size. But no standard needs to be set for the design. That seems to be the beauty of the idea.

Can we present HL with a book-a-month in 2001?

Calling all Newbies, Wackos, Saints, Cruise Directors, and collectors of Harbour Lights:

For those of you who have not been following this thread or who have not time to respond to the call, I think we now have a workable (perhaps not finalized) plan.

The goal is to present Bill and the entire HL family the collected pictures, stories, and sentiments from the peolpe who love lighthouses and Harbour Lights.

This gift will be presented to Harbour Lights at the reunion. This setting seems fitting and would add no doubt to the camaraderie & festivities.

I thank you Dave & John for your quick imput and suggestions because I would like to get this ball rolling & the word disseminated.

I would appreciate if those of you who can to format your own page. If you are unable to, I will do it for you if you send me your photos, sketches, stories, etc. John gave some great suggestions to start from. But I know your 'collective' ability to personalize your submisssion.

As to size--8 1/2" x 11" maybe the most workable. Use both sides of the page. Each page will be placed in a protective plastic sleeve. I originally thought one page (two sides) to be a good starting point but if you would like to submit an additional page that would be fine as well.

The pages will be placed in a nice binder so that all submissions could be included. Also as new members join, etc. these pages may be added to the collection.

I would like to have the book finalized by August 1, 2001, so that it will be ready by the reunion.

I will mention this plan at the Chesapeake regional meeting. Can I count on others to mention this at any meeting (regional, club, or otherwise you may attend).

I look forward to our gift to the wonderful people at HL.

Thanks,
Tim H

Hi All,

I think this will be such a special gift to the Youngers. A friend of mine does this artform and will be glad to do my front and back pages. Thanks for all the suggestions and I will spread the word on our bustrip to Orlando on Sat.

Since it will be presented at the Reunion, maybe if you move this topic to the Baltimore Reunion Forum, more will see it.

Is the album still in the works? If so, do we still send the completed pages to Tim H?

It is a great idea.

I have been in contact with Tim H., originator of the scrapbook idea and he will not be going to the reunion. As a result I offered to take the scrapbooking project over. I have a binder style Pioneer photo album with the magnetic pages that we can use. Page size is approximately 8 and 1/2 x 11. Front and back would allow for two pages per person. Your items can be sent to me for arranging or I will be happy to send you a blank page to complete and return to me for inclusion.

Ideas mentioned earlier in this thread by JChidester include:

* My Collection - photos of how you display, a paragraph on how you got started

* Meeting Bill - photos of a Harbour Lights signing event, people who were there, you and Bill, and a paragraph with date, place.

* Lighthousing - a lighthouse trip you took, hand-drawn map of the trip, lighthouse photos, special events (staying at a lighthouse, anniversary, etc.)

* Lighthouse history - old photos of a particular lighthouse, a write up of the history of it.

* HL Reunion - story of your attending either the 1997 or 1998 Reunion. Pictures, etc.

* Collector Clubs - how about it clubs? Seems like putting together a scrapbook from your club would be a great event for a future meeting.

* Thanks Harbour Lights! - your personal note to thank Harbour Lights for making such a fun product to collect, etc.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me: bugqueen@earthlink.net

DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 28TH.

Send your submissions to:

Count me in, Darlene -- thanks for taking this on. I'm going to send you an envelope of things for 'my' pages ASAP.

Others - please sign in. Can we get together at least pages from 25 collectors?

A handwritten note, a few photos, a cut-out picture or two a brochure from your favorite lighthouse, a button, pin, or small memento?

I'll put my two pages together over the next few days. You'll have it by next week. Thanks for putting this together from all of us. Since I won't be attending the reunion it gives me a chance to show how much Harbour Lights and their lighthouses mean to me.

Hey, count me in, although most of my scrapbooking pages are 12x12 I will try to have the smaller version to you in time Darlene. I have some great pics of Hatteras's reopening and the HL event some of us shared with the Youngers.
Thanks,

For those of you coming to the reunion in Baltimore, feel free to bring your photos, letters of thanks, etc. with you for our anniversary scrapbook. I will be at the Thursday night coffee with book in hand and we can add your items then. I have plenty of album pages so you don't need to have it "ready to go". We will be happy to put it together with you. I'll bring the Starbucks Coffee --- anyone bringing Krispy Kremes ???

If you are not going to be at the reunion, please mail me your items so I receive them by September 30th. I will be leaving for Baltimore on October 3rd.

If you have any questions, just click on the envelope above to email me. See you all in Baltimore.

Come on people --

Throw some photos of you at a lighthouse and maybe a photo of your HL collection into your suitcase.

Then on the plane or on the road, write a simple short note about how you started collecting and whatever else you want to say (like Congratulations on 10 years!)

And bring those things with you Thursday night. Don't Forget.

Can we get at least 25 people/clubs represented? We should be able to do 50-100 with all the Connected Collectors going.

Does someone have the Group photo that was taken in Chicago? If so, that would be a great photo to add to the scrapbook. I'm bringing my fancy scissors and some stickers and colored pens.

Other Ideas included:
Bill and Me photos taken at signing events
Club event photos
Club logo for your page
Historic Monument representing the city where you live (Gateway Arch, etc.)
Photo of you and your boat on your way to a lighthouse
Photos of other collectors from different events.
Do you have a Lighthouse on your business card? Include that with your page of photos

If you don't have enough photos for a full page, throw it into the mix with others

See you all in Baltimore!

Thanks Darlene for coordinating this. I have been putting pictures together of NELL for the scrapbook and will bring them to the reunion for inclusion in the book.

As you know, I was hoping to get them in the mail to you before now but have not been successful. Right now I'm getting ready for a trip to Lighthouse Depot on Saturday, where Bill will be signing and NELL is setting up a recruitment table. Then on Sunday it's back to CT to Marvel Shop to do the same thing (Bill's next stop).

We hit the road early on Tuesday headed for Baltimore. We'll see you there.

Hi JoAnn,

You can put your own page in the book at coffee. Just look for me, I will have it. I plan to wear my red, white and blue "mad hatter" hat. Looking forward to seeing you there.

What a great time we had Thursday night - meeting many for the first time, introducing ourselves, putting together pages for the Scrapbook. Darlene did a great job in running this project -- with help from many.

She'll fill you all in on the totals. We were able to present the scrapbook to Bill, Nancy, Kim and Maureen on Sunday at the beginning of the brunch. It was a great surprise for all!!!

Thanks everyone!

A big thank you to Darlene for taking on the spearheading of the project and to Judy Rath (Sunshine) and Ruth Cooper (Mrs TLC) for helping those of us not quite so skilled at scrapbooking. The book looked great. I just wish I had more time to read through all the contributions. Great job everyone!

The book really showed personality. I was able to view it right before Darlene finished it and believe me everyone that contributed did a wonderful job. It is really a great tribute to Bill, Nancy, Kim and Maureen for all the work they have done and will do for our HL family.

Hi Darlene,
It was so nice to spend time with you at the reunion! Thank you so much for the wonderful job you have done on the scrapbook. I'm glad there was still room to add my pictures and memories. Bill and Nancy will cherish this forever. Please stay in touch

I propose that the pages in the scrapbook be professionally copied and prepared as a booklet and offered for sale, at a fair price, to the vast Harbour Lights family. I know there are many of us who would like to see all the pictures from all the clubs. Not only sharing the fun but gaining information and ideas to help our clubs continue to do good things to save lighthouses. Copy machines are easily able to do a really pretty good job and the cost should be very reasonable. What do you collectors think.....would you like a copy?
Cheers.....VSNLEX.....PS....I sure enjoyed meeting many of you in Baltimore!!

My heartfelt thanks to everyone who made the scrapbook a reality. A week before the reunion I had my doubts as to whether this project would actually be a success -- had only received information from two clubs and 6 or 7 individual collectors. On Thursday night at the coffee, many of you brought completed pages and/or pictures to complete your page there. Throughout the reunion I kept getting pages/pictures for the scrapbook and finally finished it right before we went down for breakfast Sunday morning. We ended up with 140 pages full of pictures and best wishes from 7 clubs/organizations and over 40 individual collectors representing 20 different states. I owe a special thanks to my daughter Teresa who helped me put a number of pages together, painted the cover and ventured out Saturday morning to get pictures developed so we could include some of the Baltimore reunion in the scrapbook. Also a special thank you to Judy Rath (Sunshine) and Ruth Cooper (Mrs TLC) for all the help they provided during the reunion putting pages together. And to Derith who let us use her room Saturday night to work on the scrapbook.

How did Bill and Nancy like the scapbook? Were they surprised? Were they visibly moved?

I believe all the Harbour Lights Family were very surprised at the presentation of the Scrapbook. Since Sunday was the last event and Bill & Nancy ventured home that afternoon they did not have the time to go through the book before they left.

The Scrapbook was packed on the HL truck and should be arriving back in El Cajon today.

I imagine when things get unpacked and settled down (both Bill & Nancy are already back on the road for events), we'll be hearing from them.

to vsnlex . . .
usually when you "publish" something for resale you have to consider copyright laws and getting permission from people who can be identified in photographs . . . I see this as an almost impossible task for the scrapbook due to the volume of photos and number of people involved . . . not everyone included personal identification information with their contributions . . . but thanks for the idea . . . Many thanks to Darlene and her elves for making the scrapbook such a success! We dragged our butts on it for so long but it sure came together in the end. No doubt Bill and Nancy will enjoy it tremendously!

Thank you Darlene for inviting us to contribute to the scrapbook. I brought a few pictures to add to the book, but you certainly are to be congratulated for the wonderful job you did putting the "Memory book" together for the Youngers.
Sorry I took so long to thank you. This is the first opportunity I've had to go on line since I returned home from the reunion.

A message from Kim:

Quote:
The scrapbook/photo album is absolutely wonderful!

What a delightful surprise, and what a lot of planning and work went into it!

Thank you all for your thoughtful contributions, and for taking the time to create a tangible memento of our first 10 years.

We will enjoy it for years to come!
