Can anyone tell me when the last issue of Lighthouse Legacy was sent out? The last issue I recieved was April 2006. I hope I haven't missed any.

You have to be close - I think the last Legacy had a May cover date. Normal cycle would have one in our mail boxes on 9/1 but I have heard it has been "slipped" to the end of the month.

Will we ever see the Legacy in a hard copy form again? I'm sure there are plenty of people who miss the old format. Not everyone who collects HL's has a computer. Even those who do will probably give it a quick read and then never look at it again. It was always nice to have the old Legacys to look back at to see what was happening in the HL world of the past.

I would rather be able to curl up on the couch with a hard copy than sit at the computer and leisurely(and more comfortably...I might add) read. Bob makes a good point about not everyone having a computer!

I also miss the hard copy. Anyway the new owners could/would consider restoring this?????

They are seriously mulling over the mailed copy, but don't expect it to happen until 2007, if then.

As someone there implied, we certainly know how to print and mail things at Lighthouse Marketing LTD.

I also miss the hard copy. I print the one off the computer and keep it in the binder with the others but it just isn't the same. They already mail out the Lighthouse Digest. Maybe they will mail out the Lighthouse Legacy too. Can we still get the Lighthouse Legacy binders? Mine is full and I could use another one.

I MUST TOTALLY AGREE WITH BOBM, DEBBIE, JUDY AND CYNDI. I would love to see a hard copy of the Legacy again. I downloaded the first electronic copy, glanced through it quickly once, trashed it, and never looked for another one again.

It was difficut to read (my tired old eyes) and not worth the headaches I got from attempting to read it.

Debbie, I know what you mean about the fact that they already mail out one periodical. But we do have to subscribe to Lighthouse Digest. I know that the issue of costs always comes up. Although some will disagree with me, I would be willing to pay for a subscription to Lighthouse Legacy. Yes, I know, it's supposed to be a part of our Society membership; however, printing and mailing costs have soared since it was first offered as a part of the membership. So, if that's what it takes to get a hard copy again, I would pay for a subscription.

Cheap as I am, that would be a wonderful substitue to what we have now.

I'm going to agree with you about the subscription. It would be a heck of a lot better that trying to sit at my computer trying to read something that that I can hardly see.

Don't confuse Lighthouse Digest with Lighthouse Marketing (or Lighthouse Depot)- they are completely separate entities even though each is in Wells.

The way to encourage the return of a printed copy is to send a nice email with your thoughts and reasoning to Tony. (Remember, you get more friends with kind words than harsh words.)

It's my understanding that Tony and Don pay a lot of attention to what we post here, although I am sure individual messages would probably help, as well. So far, I don't see anyone being ugly about it; I think many people are just frustrated not to have a copy they can hold onto. I totally agree with Debbie and Bob O. I've said before that there is something special about taking a book or magazine or Lighthouse Legacy to bed to peruse at one's leisure.

Well put Grace. I remember all the back and forth when we got the first electronic copy and I really don't think things have change much since then. I'm referring to how we all feel about reading something like that on a screen. UGH! Maybe Dave has a good idea (as usual) and we should contact Tony and let him know. If he doesn't already have a good idea as to how we feel he will know then you betcha. He does seem like he is willing to listen and change things if its for the greater good.

In talking with Tony at St. Augustine, he is a man that would do just about anything to help the collectors and Harbour Lights. I'm sure that individual emails to him would be helpful rather then what is posted on this site. The cost of sending out colored printed copies has increased since the Youngers sent them out so there may be an increase in Membership dues if Tony agrees to start the printed copy again. Would an increase in approx. $6-$8 a year still be worth the printed copy. That would make your membership increase from $39 a year to $45-$47 a year. What say you to this possibility? If you have no problems with this then let Tony know that you would be willing to increase your membership fee to start getting a hard copy again.

This is just a thought on my part and for my part to get back to a hard copy I would be willing to pay the additional fees. I have already told Tony this information. Let him know. He won't bite.

While I think individual emails to Tony would be an effective way to make ideas known, I also see nothing wrong with the "conversation" going on in this thread.

Tony also made it quite clear that he frequents the forums and reads what we have to say.

Judy, nothing wrong with discussion, but the individual emails sharing a concern or thought or request carry much more weight. Kind of like the personal letter vs a signature on a petition.

Although the idea of an increase in membership fees does sound like a good alternative, I have a feeling that a lot of people would not go with that - some folks already feel they pay too much. I prefer the idea of keeping it separate by subscribing. Those who want a hard copy can subscribe; it will prevent the problem of folks not joining the Society because of the higher fees. Just my personal opinion.

Am I the only one that printed the Legacy when it arrived via the computer? Made for informative reading material when I found time to leisurely read it, just as it used to when it arrived in the mail.

Judy - I didn't mean not to continue the discussion on this thread. Good ideas come out through discussion on the Forums and they should be expressed. I meant that if a person felt strongly enough about getting a hard copy that they should also let Tony know individually what their feelings and ideas are.

Grace - Maybe a subscription is the way to go rather then an increase in dues. The only problem I see with a subscription is MORE paperwork to keep up with.

I know of a few magazine subscriptions that you can get both in email & hardcopy formats. The email format is standard and the hard copy is at a little extra cost.

I'm ok with the email format, I print it as soon as it arrives in my inbox.

I can also understand with those who like the hardcopy format. Either for collecting, or just finding it in the daily mail after a long hard day and sitting on the couch and reading with your favorite beverage.

Maybe I should start a poll to get feedback on the separate subscription vs increase in Society fees.

That might not be a bad idea Grace. I for one would not like to see an increase in prices and I think that might stop some "borderline" members from continuing their membership. I would not like to see someone not renew their membership due to an increase in price, when the increase was for the Legacy.

I think a separate subscription for The Legacy is the way to go.

I think that a seperate subscription is the way to go. There has been a lot of discussion here on the forums already about the Collector's Society and whether you should join or not. I think with the way the economy is going...there may be people that can't afford to join right now or don't find it a good value or whatever. But a subscription is usually an amount that you can handle and you have your hard copy to look forward to each month or quarter. You can have it close at hand to browse whenever the urge hits you. I know I would definitely subscribe!!

Debbie - A separate subscription to the Legacy is fine as long as the prerequiste for this subscription is being a member of the Harbour Lights Society. My personal opinion is that people will subscribe to the Legacy and let the HL Society go down. Without the HL Society there is no Lighthouse Legacy magazine because we will lose our identity. I don't think that the membership fee of $39.00 over a 12 month period will hurt a person. That equates down to $3.25 a month for the membership . This equates to one Burger King, one gallon of gas, a box of movie popcorn or three 20 oz soft drinks a month . And for that $3.25 a month($39.00 a year) you get a lighthouse worth more then the $39.00.

Plus, the subscription is a lot healthier for you than all of the above. I agree re the prerequiste being a must for the subscription.

I would be willing to pay the extra for a hard copy. I agree you should be a society member. I do print it from my inbox. I just prefer to sit in comfort and read it, then to sit at the computer. Plus I can always go back and read it again later whenever I want.

Agreed...you should be a member. I think though that the subscription should be offered for those that do want the hard copy. That way the membership fee stays down for those that are happy with the soft copy and those that might be discouraged from joining by higher membership cost.

What would you think about an online service similar to the photo printing ones?

We could upload a high resolution PDF and you could go to that site, pay a fee and a one-off copy folded and bound like the mailed ones would be produced and sent to you within 2-3 days.

I have no idea if that's available and what the cost would be. But if there's interest in it, I'll do some research and see if can be done.

John - I'm with Bob. I like nothing about the idea of on-line ordering.

I agree with Bob and Rich. Is not appealing.

I guess it's because I do most of my shopping online - it's so easy, so convenient, so quick and I can do it in the middle of the night if I forget during the day. I woke up in the middle of the night recently, remembered I hadn't made a purchase I had to have like yesterday, went online and, voila, my order was on the way!

Likewise Grace. Lots of women today lead such busy lives, work, home, kids, grandkids, that having the advantage of being able to shop on-line and have it delivered right to your door has been a godsend!

I emailed Harbour Lights when the initial changes were made, no pin, no Legacy (Boo-Hoo) and told them I understood; but would like to see either higher membership prices or different levels of membership.

Sounds like a good idea to me, John.

Seems like this is getting split pretty much along gender lines.

But let me say I was suggesting it as an "Option". If it meant an increase in dues and that would be opposed by some, then those who wanted a printed copy mailed to them could get it this way without affecting the membership cost for others.

Kind of like the "tiered" approach. Perhaps a particular issue had some special interest for you and you wanted to send copies to family and friends, then you could do so.

Or -- and this is just an idea -- for those who don't want to join the CS but would like to see the Legacy, it could be offered this way.

Again, I disagree with the part of viewing the Legacy without belonging to the Society. IF YOU DON'T BELONG AND SUPPORT THE SOCIETY, YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO VIEW THE LEGACY! That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Well I belong to the society, but I NEVER SEEM TO GET A LEGACY ANYMORE! And I am not in favor of paying extra $$$ for something we used to get with our membership...I'm already considering not renewing my membership and just waiting for the "members only" pieces to show up on Ebay before deciding to purchase...doesn't seem all that special to belong anymore...

We never get the Legacy anymore. I can't remember when the last issue was that I saw. I thought they were suppose to send it to members. I certainly would prefer the hard copy--never had problems getting an issue until it went online.

Apparently there are still some glitches; you need to let them know. I notified HL when the last issue came out because I didn't get it. I received it from Kathy shortly thereafter.

You don't 'receive' the legacy by email. You should receive a notice by email from Harbour Lights (not from me) on how to retrieve the legacy. If you do not receive that notice (and there has been publicity on the Harbour Lights website when the notice has been sent out) then you should contact Harbour Lights at 800-365-1219.

We'll all be looking forward to receiving that email!

Perhaps there is nothing NEW to say to justify an new edition of the "Legacy" so late in the year.

I read the "on-line" Legacy yesterday. I was thoroughly impressed with its content. I really enjoyed the article on our resident photograper, Paul Brady.

This publication was extremely well done. It's too bad it wasn't in hard copy form and mailed to all society members.
