Calling Dr. Heimlich, Dr. Henry J. Heimlich. Please report immediately to the Collectors Forums, stat! Choking victim. 3:20 - 3:30 p.m. EST 3/18/00.
I doubt that this thread is getting anywhere near the number of responses that it should get simply because it is most frustrating to post during such an occurrance. I almost didn't post this because it was taking so blasted long to load the "Post Reply" form page. Anyone else who is similarly frustrated, please write down the time of the occurrance and report back here later when things smooth out a bit. That's what I intend to do from now on.

Just to keep us all reporting the facts. Make sure that the slow down is just on this server. If you find that you are dragging along at different sites on the WWW, it means that it could be your service provider's server or even a combination of more than one. This will keep the data collection accurate concerning the server that is handling the Forums. Something to consider and a friendly reminder Sean

I thought I would bring this one back to the top. I have experienced the Server Overload Message a couple times over the past couple of weeks.

No overload messages, but thread loading has been anywhere from verrrrrrrrry slow to non-existent. Have noticed slowness earlier this week, but tonite I could time the response time / loading time with a sun dial. (for some threads it may be daylight before they do load up).

I too have been experiencing very slow access time in the forums, even using a network card at my office computer. With AOL at home, I'm beginning to wonder if snail-mail would be faster. I've got to get Road Runner service for home! Also, I'm having problems accessing the Forums via the new no-frames version of the HL website. Anyone else? Tim - Keeping the flame lit... When I first uploaded the revised home pages last night, the 'Collector Forums' 'Screen Savers' and one other Link were corrupted. I fixed those this morning.
The links that appear on the Frames home page, also appear on the No-Frames home page; this is the group of links that start off with the next chat date. Some of these links are now replacing the whole page - even in the frames home page. I'll try to get that to work correctly regardless of which home page you choose.

Thanks John... that (accessing the 'Collector Forums' via the no frames page)was the problem I was having, which I described in a previous post in this thread. Thanks again for your help! Tim - Keeping the flame lit...

Lamar, You have to read the whole post to learn the secrets.... (for some threads it may be daylight before they do load up).
The forums are responding much quicker tonite. Thanks for tweaking the host, John. Dave

Are the gremlins back? The past several evenings I have noticed much slower than normal response times (but not yet approaching the 'time it with a hourglass' slowness of the past). Thought it could be my ISP, but nothing slow about other sites.
FWIW, Dave

This seems to be the one of the few sites I have NOT noticed any slow/no response in the past 2 days. Fri. night and again Sat. night between 8pm and 11pm (not on for all 3 hours) I have not had any luck surfing the Web. Many sites are not loading or take 5 minutes to load the first page then never go to any other pages at that site. HL's site and the forums see to be okay. Must be not too many people visiting here, they are all elsewhere.

As a "newbie" with a lot of time on my hands, I haven't had any problems in the 3-4 days I've been visiting "the site"(is there any other worth the time, I think not!) and posting a lot. I've been to almost every 'forum' at least once, and posted to many. I am truly thrilled with finding this site devoted to something I cherish, Harbour LIghts/Lighthouses!! I've never received any messages like that. I've always been able to get into the CF whenever I want to. I'm also pleased to announce that I always get on line with AOL anytime I want to. Not like a couple of years back. Bob

John,
It's been a while since this thread has had to be used. To say the site has been slow tonite would be somewhat of a gross understatement. I was looking for the hourglass to time it with. To load this thread alone took over 2 minutes. To be sure it wasn't my computer or ISP I went to a very graphic intensive site and had no problems at all. I've been on since about 2130 EST.

I don't want to say the site has been slooooooow, but I would venture a guess that many of Digger's customers move more quickly. I gave up last night when it was taking 5+ minutes to load a thread. This morning has been deathly slow. As this is posted it is getting a little better - brings back the days of the good old 300 baud modems.

Definitely Dave! Even at my office where we have 4 T1 carriers with mega bandwidth, the response times have been slow. Now, at home last night... forget it! I logged off and gave up. I think everyone in my neighborhood must of been on line at the same time. Tim - Keeping the flame lit...

I have experience slow loading times in the forum. At first I thought it was my 3-year old computer until I went to another forum with the same software and found loading times much quicker. Can this be corrected? Bob

How to check your response time The above thread can help you check response times. Its really quite simple. And here's a tip. Try some of its suggestions when your response time is good and write down the results. Then check when the response time is bad and write down the results. This way you'll have a little log you can show your ISP if you need to. Fwiw, Bob - the slowness you experience at times is not due to your 3 year old computer. Your computer is just as fast on the 'good days' as it is on the 'slow days' - so you can generally rule that out of the equation. The issue could be anywhere from your local ISP all the way to the server where this site is hosted, and in between. This is not to say you wouldn't obtain some small gain from a faster computer - but there are alot of variables even there. The easy things you can do to upgrade performance are: a) a faster video card (thats what makes the pictures on your screen) or b) a faster Internet connection. To get a faster Internet connection at home typically will mean going to a cable modem - same wires as you get cable tv with, or a DSL modem. If you are dialing up through your phone line, talk to your ISP. If your ISP is AOL, well you have my sympathies. :-) I'm sure somewhere around North Rattleboro there is a competent ISP who can help you out. Ask your friends who they use and if they're satisfied. If available in your area the cable modem is usually quite reasonable. Add what you pay each month to your ISP plus the cost of a second phone line if you have one. Usually cable modem service will be about the price of those two so its often a wash. And while sometimes the Net is just slow - a cable modem will make a big increase in your enjoyment of the Internet. Hope this helps, __ /im [This message has been edited by JTimothyA (edited 02-14-2001).]

When you report slow response here in this thread, please indicate:
1. The URL you were TRYING to get to.
2. The time of day and your time zone.
3. Your connection to the Internet (56K dialup, cable, DSL, etc.)
4. What happened - and any messages you got. For example, the page would not fully load.
5. Your operating system (Windows 95, 98, etc. Mac OS8)
Only with all this information can I get a response from the web hosting company so they can check logs and see what else was going on at the same time.
Thanks,
John

trying to connect to the forums - http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/forums/ at 2100 EST Tues & 1000 Wed on a 56K dial up both times from systems using IE5 & Win98 no messages, just unbelievably slow - though I did not try Tims test (above) (I couldn't wait long enough for the thread to load any way). Going to other web sites was not an issue. Even ones that are normally slow loading were no different Dave

I also experienced very slow reponse times yesterday. I tried logging on at about 7 p.m. and tried at many times and always stalled at about 39 percent. Only part of the home page would show. It took the fifth try, about 15 minutes worth of trying, before it loaded completely.
I have AOL, 56K modem dial up, windows 98.
I didn't have difficulty on any other site.
