OK, let's see what you've got CF Members.

Post your best cropped photo in the proportions of 3 x 1 width to height. Lighthouse related, of course.

Only post your OWN photo. If we get lots of entries, I'll narrow it down to 3-4 choices and We'll ask for a show of hands from our members in a quick poll to pick the next image to run for a few months.

We'll add the type and resize the picture as needed. By entering this 'contest' you agree to allow use of your photo for this purpose without compensation (other than the glory and recognition).

Daytime, nighttime, photoshopped or not, doesn't matter. Show us what you've got. One entry per member. ( smile )

In the event of a tie, we'll pick one for now, the other for later.

The decision of the Saints is final.

Post your entries in this thread. If you don't know how to post a picture, email it to webmaster@lighthousekeepers.com and I'll post it for you.

Deadline for entries is August 21.

You mean 3 times as wide as it is tall? Because except for screwpile lights, most of mine are taller than they are wide.

Yep, that's the crop - shaped like the SOL picture at the top of this page.

I'm open to creativity. If you have a sequence of 3 photos you want to put side-by-side in the same space, that MIGHT work, too.

John, I think this is a great idea! It opens up the CF for more lights than just mine. Come on everyone, let's see what you got!!

There's a little something wrong with each of my pictures, so it's hard for me to pick the 'best'.

Some of them have the camera just slightly off level. (That's the most common flaw) Some of them are film pictures which just aren't as sharp. Some of them are backlit and you can't see the detail as well. Some are just too far away and zooming them in degrades the quality.

So I'm submitting this one with the fishing boats, which isn't the best I've got, or even the best I have of this lighthouse, but it is a little bit unusual and I think I've got it cropped to about the right dimensions. I waited for the light to be flashing in my direction.

Thanks, Rosalie. For others, I can straighten horizons and so some cropping. Just show us what you've got and we'll work with it if it's a finalist.

Cool! The opportunity of a "moment in the sun" I've always wanted! Thing is, I have a ton of photos to dig through.

I have some cool ones of Little Gull in the fog, but I think it's too foggy to work. Also some nice ones of Latimer Reef from the water. And some good pierheads and such from the lakes.

Gotta weed through the CDs...

WOW! You sure can say that again!

I love the sillouette that suggests the keeper looking out to sea from his lighthouse.

And the colors! Going into fall, from the summer of blues and greens...how perfect!

Sorry, folks, but if you want to have ONE in contention you will need to stipulate which one that is. Lots of room down in the Picture Gallery to share all those other great shots. Not trying to discourage sharing pictures, but we need to stick with the posted rules and keep this thread to ONLY those pictures to be considered, please.

Sorry, Dave, I didn't know it was one entry per person. My fault for not reading John's post more carefully. That's why I gave up working with the Bomb Squad. I posted more than one pic to try to generate more interest.

Cool idea!

I might have one or two that I could choose from to post. Does it have to be the whole lighthouse or just a lantern room shot?

Chose ONE to enter. It can be any crop you'd like.

ONE Entry per person, please. Those who've posted more than one above, please edit your post and leave behind the ONE you'd like to have considered.

I like Jim's picture of the sunset best. Mine of Smith Point would be second, and third would be Point Judith.

In my humble opinion, Pt. Judith Light and USCG Station from the water would be a clear winner.

Let's hold off on comments until the voting time. Don't want to think anyone's choice is a 'done deal' or discourage others from posting their best shots.

Thanks

Sorry, didn't read about only one entry.

I deleted all of mine because they sucked. frown

I only have a few of my lighthouse pictures downloaded on my computer. My scanner died two years ago and I never have put aside money to replace it. If Anchor Bay would stop making cool ships, then I would have some left over to buy a new scanner. I also have a hard time justifying buying a brand new scanner for a seven year old computer.

You need a picture with a little extra sky and sea that can be cropped out, and that has a strong horizontal componant - like a point of land that sticks out into the water. Pictures taken from the water with something interesting on the horizon behind the lighthouse work also. So the current picture, you have the skyline of NYC behind the statue.

My picture originally was more square

John, I got the fact that there was to be ONE entry per person. What I was saying was, I might have one or two to choose from (for me to choose from) and that I could post it (one). wink

Anyway, if I may make a suggestion, a new thread should be started for those who want to post their ONE entry and leave this one for any discussion-taking place on said entry.

This is way cool. I love to see the different images you guys have and I think it's very fair to vote and have a new image up say, every quarter. I feel proud to be a part of some very talented photographers in this group!

Keep 'em coming, gang. As several have noted, lots of 'winners' here and we can rotate the top ones through the next couple of years quarter-by-quarter. So if you've got a 'winner' of your own, by all means post it now.

Deadline for entries is midnight Monday.

I'm going to ask Jen to help me select the finalists and we'll set up a voting system that allows people to choose up to 3. Most total votes will get used starting September 1, next most will get used starting January 1, then April 1, etc.

So the 'winner' of the winners in this next vote will get an extra month of exposure.

Don't forget some winter shots - we may take some 'judges discretion' to choose a winter shot for January 1.

Dave,

As long as the photograph pictures only the women in our group, I don't think that would happen.

However, if it includes the men, fright might be a influential factor.

Alright....after pouring through my CDs and looking for just the right shot, I think I've found it. I also found some "hidden gems" I'd forgotten about, though it was tough to find a shot that could be cropped right.

This is Little Gull Island, NY from the water, with the rigging of my dad's friend's sailboat in the foreground. Taken this June.
