If you have a 'Favorite Places' link to the Collector Forums, you should be certain it is this one:
http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/cgi-bin/forumscgi/Ultimate.cgi

If you have one that ends in 'Bypass_cookies = "True"' you won't get the lights and red folders to work correctly.

I'm thinking it has been a long time since most of us saw the red/pink folders! I have this as a separate "favorite" but I generally come in thru the HL site just to take a quick check to see if there's anything new & to enjoy the great pictures of the week!

My link to the Forums did not have "bypass_cookies", but it DID have "?action=intro" appended. When I took that off to give me the same url you suggested above, the pink folders reappeared as well as the correct number of days to show messages.
