Really like your picture Mark... What's the secret to taking a picture directly into the sun? Mine never come out.

Automatic modes are always trying to 'balance' the bright and dark areas of the picture. When the bright sun is in the picture, the exposure is adjusted darker - maybe too dark. 2. Try allowing your camera to set the exposure mode by raising the view above the sun (no sun in the picture), gentle press part way down on the shooting button, then recomposing the image with the sun in the picture and press the shutter the rest of the way down 3. Look at your camera's various modes and see if there is a 'bracketing' function. Try shooting under that mode. (Usually takes 3 images with one push of the shutter button; one under exposed, one 'normal' and one over exposed.) 4. Your digital camera may have a 'sunset' mode. 5. Or shoot in a manual mode and stop the f-stop down or the shutter speed to a higher setting. With digital cameras, getting the right picture is easy with trial-and-error.

Thanks for the kind words. John is correct on how it was metered, I just turned the camera to the side and metered with the sun out of the picture, looked at the settings and set them manually. That was also my very first try with a roll of slide film, taken with a camera that (now) seems like a camera from the stone age, A Canon AE1 program. Probably about 5-7 years ago.
