I'm trying out some new indicators about whether there are new posts in forums since your last visit -- assuming you permit the CF to use cookies.

These would appear on the home page and on the 'home page' for each of the individual forums.

My thinking is that those bigger images we have been using take up quite a bit of cumulative vertical space. If you scroll, more screen to scroll; if you print it takes more paper.

What's your preference?

The text buttons or the lighthouse photos?

Text sounds like a good idea to me.

The buttons sound better to me, too, John.

I like the text better also. It just stands there and screams right out at you "Hey I'm New".

I preferred the icons. They tie in better designwise. Maybe if they were smaller, like 50x50?

These seem really confusing to me, though...hard to diffrentiate.

I tried scrolling up and down and it's a lot quicker to find stuff. I agree with Rich that it's easier to spot what's new, too. The pictures, although nice, take up too much space.

5-4 for the 'text' buttons...

...but are these a good compromise:

That is not bad John, but put the lighthouse in both pictures. You could switch the text to "YES" and "NO" and that way have the best of both worlds!

These are MUCH better...only suggestion...keep the general image the same as before, but different size. I think that people are used to the old images for old and new posts, and it'll be easier to adjust.

BTW, like the new buttons on the bottom for posting and replying, too! smile

Keep the lighthouse in both pictures and just show a Red "YES" in the new topics. If the word "NO" appears in old topics it will be too cluttered. The "YES" really stands out great. It is the "pictures tell a thousand words" theme that you have going here. I also like the "post" topic pictures. It is also easy to pick out.

The thin pictures seem to be a good compromise. I like the word "new" instead of "yes" - think it makes more sense. I would agree with Scott about leaving the light in both pictures. With the word "new" literally blaring at you it will be very hard to miss the obvious.

The more I think about it, flacoastie is right in that having the "YES" and "NO" might make it too cluttered. In that case, I am with Dave in that "NEW" is better, I simply suggested "YES" and "NO" because they go together and I think "NOPE" would cover the lighthouse if you put it back in the picture.

Just my 2 cents.

I use today's active topics to navigate the forums and read what has been recently posted.. That way I don't just see the latest thread that has been repsonded to in a forum..

John, my preference is the lighthouse photos. I find those labels distracting and kinda loud-they shout out at you.

Now if you could make the lighthouse photo light up when there are new posts, that would be kinda cool.

Anyway, like Paul, I almost always go to the "Today's Topic's" page. Only if I've been away for awhile do I search the other page which I guess is really the "home" page.

I also agree with Judy

I go to "Today's Active Topics", as well, but like the new view when I go to the homepage. Scrolling is a lot quicker.

Is it possible the text size on the main page also shrank, or do the new skinnier pictures give that impression?

Optical illusion - or your eyes are going bad.

Well, I think it's going to be the way it is now for a while anyway.

Gees! Go away for a week and everything's changed!! Like the new look. As to where I go when I enter the site--just like the newspaper, read it front to back. First "new" becomes first read.

Had perfect weather in GA and SC all of last week. Lots of pics to post when photographer and I choose which to keep and then clean them up.

I've definitely adjusted now, and love these even more than the big icons. My only idea is to make the icons for new/no new posts from the same section of the image as the old ones. Maybe some continuity would help us all with recognition. I personally like the contrasting colours when zipping through the page with a few spins of the scrollwheel - they pop out more than the same image with text.

But it's still really good this way...

BTW, yes...I'm an index pager. Never really liked the Active Topics page...more fun to see it from the actual forum page.

Greg, when the word "new" blares out from the screen, it will be pretty obvious to all that there is something different in those threads, perhaps something new?
