Whenever I log on to the homepage, there is no indication that anyone has posted since the last time I logged on. If I click on any category and then click on using my back button, the new posts indicator appears. Anybody know why this happens?

Sounds like the page is not automatically refreshing. Try clicking on the RELOAD or REFRESH button and see if the indicators change.
