Ok, here's something else happening to me, maybe some others also?

When checking the forums from the home page, not the "last day" or "last 24 hours" it goes like this. I go to the first thread with a light. Then I go back to the main page and the subsequent forum lights that had been lit are now out. Now I do have two pc's but I don't think this happened until quite recently.

Mombo, Joanne, I've noticed the same thing. If I start on the home page, all the lights are lit on topics with new info since I last logged on. As long as I use my back button to the home page the lights stay lit.

However, if I jump back by clicking collectors forum on top rt. page ALL lights disappear.

I like the lit lights better than just hitting today's active topics 'cause then I don't miss anything that came up after I log off around 9-10 PM until midnight.

This has been happening to me for a while. I like it when the lighthouse is lit, too. It's much easier than scanning down the dates on the right side to see any new posts. Can we fix it ourselves? I also have all yellow folders all the time. I've eliminated my "cookies" as suggested, but it's still happening.

Mine go out if I use the back button too, but not always, just sometimes. Guess we were spoiled, now we have to be more alert. C'est la vie!

Addendum: I went "back" via the Collector Forum and all lights lit. Then I refreshed and all went out. Must be lighthouse gremlins....

Mombo,

Same thing happend to me going back via "the collector forum". ALL the lights were lit - and stayed lit even after reading the posts. Go figure. This is still the best site on the net -- even with the little gremlins.

HLPW Harbour Light Power & Water representatives request that you conserve usage and turn off the lights as you leave. Since some have been leaving them on... they put the gremlins to work to make sure to turn em off

Please let me know which browser and version you are using when you either do NOT get pink folders or you DO get folders.

To check the version of your browser, click on HELP at the top of the screen, then choose "About...." at the bottom of the list.

I'm using Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE or IE) version 5.00 on Windows 98. I do not have problems with the Pink Folders.

If you are using Netscape, you will find that the 'jumpbox' which appears on many pages at www.HarbourLights.com does not work. MSIE users will see a pop-down list of site pages that they can jump to.

John -

I'm using Internet Explorer 4.0, Version 4.72 with Windows 95. I don't get pink folders unless I click on preferences and submit new preferences every time I am on the forums.

Win 95, IE 5.0. Lights are on & fairly accurate. Only pink folder I have seen in some time was the one in Art's test elsewher. Doesn't matter if I re-submit preferences. Gave up on the folders some time ago.

MSIE 5.00.2314.1003IS, Win95 here.

No light problems, except when I page-back from the "Playroom" Forum. When I do that, the lights all reset to my current visit cookie. (?) This seems to be unique to the Playroom; other Fora don't do this to me.

No pink folders (ever) except when I do this: . None since 12/31/99, anyway.

Well, I'm not a computer genius but I believe that if you use the "back" button, the lights stay lit because your browser does NOT go back and actually reload the page. I believe that it goes into "cached" memory and just posts a copy of the last time you pulled up the page which usually was just moments before, hence you see the "prior" lights that were there.

On the other hand, if you opt to go "backwards" by clicking on the "collectors forum" link on the upper right (for example) the browser does NOT consider this as just simply going "back" but rather as a request to go to a NEW link. It therefore actually DOES reload the page, hence the lights are out & or the folders appear because there is no longer an initial association with when you last logged on (which is what I think the lights represent). Whew.......

Anyway, if I'm not correct, I believe that I'm sort-of on the right track and most likely the system is actually OK, (IMHO)

... And furthermore, you can almost verify my prior post because when you use the "back" button, you return almost instantaneously (thus suggesting it is probably cached data), but if you use the links on the upper right, it probably takes much much longer, thus suggesting a complete "reload" of the page. However, if you don't back out the cookies don't update. Going out thru the top will bypass this update, and the fora will not know you have been there. Kind of a Catch 22.

I believe using the back arrow is the way to go, and when I get to the end I hit 'refresh' on the main page to update what it thinks I have seen. If there are new posts today after I visited that forum (or if I post something) the light will be on. Otherwise the light will then go out.

FWIW, Dave

I don't believe the cookie gets refreshed everytime you load a page from the server. It may be on a timer - refresh each day, or based some other fixed duration. If there was a log-on or log-off function, they could sync the cookies to that, but the board doesn't work that way.

Perhaps JC can query the UBB folks to find out how its supposed to work. Also could be a bug.

Until I started using Cookie Pal, I had the browser set to ask whether or not I would accept cookies. Every time I left a forum it would ask about 4 cookies. Figure some of these were updates to existing cookies. According to Cookie Pal, this session at this site it has accepted 13 cookies so far.
Figure it has to be tied into entering and exiting each individual forum somehow????
