Hi Bob,
Put me down as interested in the Long Island group. Wish I were closer, but the only other club/group in my vicinity is Kingston, 90 miles north.

The above committee has decided to go foward with the application and formation of the Long Island Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society. The first objective of the Chapter is to enroll 50 members. If you are interested please email me and I will send you further information. We look foward to your input and participation. We will be meeting at Old Field and Hortons Point Lighthouse on August 5th and 6th. (see Wildbirds post) http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/forums/Forum15/HTML/000179.html OBJECTIVES INCLUDE but are not limited to: saving and maintaining Long Island Lighthouses including Plum Island and Cedar Island, and reopening Eatons Neck to the public. Bob,
Did you receive the e-mail I had sent to you yesterday concerning the club? I am very interested in joining. I know I live a considerable distance from LI, but I visit there often and I still consider it home.

Hi Everyone, Thanks for your interest. The steering committee for the formation of the Long Island Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society was started in order to have a primary agency for the restoring of Plum Island Lighthouse. The initial steering committee is made up of the Lighthouse Committee members of the East End Seaport Marine and Museum Foundation. Bob Muller is acting President and I am acting Secretary. Projects a. Plum Island Lighthouse restoration b. Possible responsibility for Long Beach Bar lighthouse c. Cedar Island Lighthouse National Register application d. Reopening of Eaton’s Neck tower to public e. Creation of Chapter Logo – Shinnecock Lighthouse with 4 beams extending to the 4 corners of an outline of Long Island Outings · Beacons of the LI Night cruise, and the possibility of October 14 or 15 Our first mission is to enroll 50 members Wayne Wheeler has Okayed new members for the first year through September 2001, so you won’t be getting double billed for a new year as the US Lighthouse year runs from October 1 to September 30. Also the membership rate will be going up Nationally on October 1. If you’re a new member $35 will get you a National and Long Island membership through September 2001.Family membership is $50. If you’re already a member in the US Lighthouse Society, Chapter dues are $15 and $20. Corporate membership is $250. Membership form: http://www.longislandlighthouses.com/USLHS/memberform.htm Here’s our website: http://www.longislandlighthouses.com/USLHS/INDEX.HTM Thank you all for your interest. and I will continue to keep you up to date Thanks, Bob Ps Give me some feedback on what you think!

Membership drive continues as we hope to reach our mandated minimum of 50 by October 14th. We are having a Unique Night criuse to view the East End Lighthouses at night under a full moon on October 14th. We are also having a fundraising raffle for a Lightship from Harbour Lights at a $1 a chance and 6@$5. Please email me if you like to join, want to go on the cruise or want some raffles. Please see above for the charter statement of the Organization For those you have joined we were finally able to get our nonprofit status approved and will be processing your Chapter and National memberships this coming week.

Just an update. We now have at 25+ members, and are planning our first meeting(get together and election of officers) for mid- January at Fire Island. Beacons of Night this Saturday out of Greenport at 5pm, it's suppose to be warm! If you're in the area I can still get you aboard. Thanks for your continued support.

We had a very successful first outing of the Long Island Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society on Saturday Night. 80+ people attended as the mild weather and full moon lit the night. After a spectacular sunset, a box lunch meal with hot homemade soup; the night concluded with a awesome view of Little Gull and Bug Light backlit by the full moon! Everyone on board was anxious for our next cruise (Do you do these every week?)which regrettably will have to wait for the end of winter. We do plan to have the first membership meeting of the club in mid-January.

Some of the uniques things you see while traveling at night were the working lights of the lighthouses. We were able to see the red blinking light of Race Rock from a distance in front of us while checking the white light from Montauk at 2 o'clock. I found it very comforting that although we were out in the middle of the sea in the dark that I could figure out where we were by recognizing the lighthouses as they were meant to be. This may sound a little naive to you mariners but to a landlubber, it was pretty cool experience.

I remember reading something somewhere saying that a meeting of the Long Island chapter would take place on January 7, 2001. Is that still true and do you have more information? Is it open to people who may be interested in joining?
