The Harbour Lights Collectors Club - Great Lakes District meeting started at 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The speakers at the meeting were Ed Werner, retired USCG Commander & lighthouse historian & Tim Sweet president of FORI-Friends Of Rock Island. Rock Island is where our adopted lighthouse is located. The meeting opened with Jim Johnston welcoming the members & guests that attended. We had competition with the Green Bay Packers game, but still had a good turn out. Ed started with why lighthouses were needed and the history of various lighthouses, then his involvement with the renovation of the Southport Light Station in Kenosha, WI. Ed put together an excellent slide presintation for about an hour. In between speakers, Jim talked about the North Point Lighthouse in Milwaukee and where our involvement stands with that project. Next Tim Sweet took over the meeting with his slide show on Rock Island & the Pottawatomie Lighthouse and how he became involved with the lighthouse. The lantern room will be mounted onto the lighthouse starting June 14,99 and a celabration picnic lunch will be the following Sunday. The week following that, we will need volunteers to help with different duties preparing the inside of the lighthouse. I will have a section in the newsletter giving names & phone #'s of near by accommodations if you do not wish to primitive camp on the island. If you would like to get your hands dirty on a lighthouse project, this one would be a great opportunity! The last portion of the meeting was were members talked about their expericences at the Rhode Island Collectors Reunion. The Great Lakes District Club had 24 members attending the Reunion. Thanks to all for making it a fun time. KeeperJJ
