I just sent the following email to our club members informing them of the club being honored for their work at the Old Michigan City lighthouse.. I am posting it here in the forums because many of you have shared in our efforts by supporting our opportunity drawings in raising funds to pay for our projects at the lighthouse..

Next Tuesday evening the club will be honored for their work at the lighthouse.. Doyne, Cindy and Jackie will ably represent us at the La Porte County Historical Society's dinner and meeting. In the words of their historian who contacted Kat and Larry through our website..

"The Hoosier Lighthousing Club was nominated and chosen by the committee for the award for 2008 for the organization currently preserving La Porte County History."

This award is for everyone who has not only worked at the lighthouse but those who over the years have helped us raise funds for the many projects. I gave Bill Younger a call today informing him of the award for the club and he was thrilled.. I have also emailed Don and Tony at Harbour Lights about the honor.

Congratulations,

Paul L Brady

p.s. An 150th anniversary celebration for the Old Michigan City Lighthouse will be held on August 9, 2008 at the lighthouse. Everybody is encouraged to attend and help celebrate the anniversary.. Entertainment will be provided by folk singer, Lee Murdock..

Congratulations to all those in the Hoosier Lighthousing Club!

We've been following this group of lighthouse wackos -- and friends -- since the founding. Paul has taken us 'along' on the various service projects and while we couldn't be there in person, we could see the progress from each effort to bring OMC to the glory that it deserved.

The County Historical Society couldn't have picked a better representative of what volunteers can do when they are motivated and passionate about their project.

"Way to go!" to everyone associated with the Hoosier Lighthousing Club in the past and present.

Yes it is quite a honor..

Cindy Cole sent me an email this morning to forward to the club about the event that she and her husband Doyne represented the club at this past Tuesday.. They were the perfect representatives for the Club since Doyne is our construction expert and does a lot of the "heavy lifting" when it comes to our restoration work, including of course the recent hardwood floor work that the Cole's company did at the lighthouse..

Below is Cindy's email since a lot of forum mebers have been involved in our club's efforts from the beginning..

Dear HLC Club

As some or all of you may know. Hoosier Lighthousing Club has been chosen for an award by the LaPorte Historical Society. We were contacted by Paul and Kat to see if we could attend. I am so happy now that we were able to go. Wow what an amazing night. We met Jackie in the parking lot just as we were going in. Talk about perfect timing.
They had a time of visiting at 6pm but we did not make it there until 6:20. Fern met us at the door to welcome us. After a great dinner of roast pork, green beans and mashed potatoes, rolls, salad and dessert, they had a short meeting and then the awards. We were so honored and humbled to be there. They gave three awards. One for historian, which was given to Bruce Johnson, Indiana History teacher from South Bend who has done many things to preserve history from doing a childrens coloring book of LaPorte County which can be purchased at their museum, to investagating and promoting the history of LaPorte County. Also awarded was an artist, from the past, who did several drawings of historical building in LaPorte which are in the museum. His daughter received the award as her father is now deceased. After the ceremony they took some pictures and we were able to see the displays of each recipients work.
I am not sure who did ours but it was a good one. Time was so short we were not able to talk to everyone and get an idea on who did all the setup and work on the displays.
It was wonderful to meet these dedicated people with a passion to preserve the history of Laporte. I would love it if our club to go to LaPorte as a group and tour their amazing 35000 sq ft museum. They brag it is the best in the USA.
Doyne spoke when receiving the award to honor Bill Younger who got us all together and of course Paul Brady who was the glue that stuck us together and gave us the vision to atempt all that we been able to do.
Thanks for allowing us to represent the club. We hope we did all of you justice in accepting the award.
A plaque hangs in the LaPorte County Museum listing all recepients past and present. The plaque has already been engraved with our club name on it and it will be hung in the museum today.
Cindy and Doyne
P.S. Doyne would like to suggest that we hang this plaque in the attic room by the spiral stairs.
Doyne's suggestion for where to put the plaque is since the stairway project has been one of our major one's and it has enabled visitor to climb to the lantern room and share the view with Harriet Colfax ...
