Because we do raise funds that benefit lighthouses here in the Forums, Harbour Lights considered us as a 'Club' at the 2001 Reunion.

That meant that a portion of the proceeds from the auction and opportunity drawings could go towards a specific lighthouse in our names.

On your behalf, and after seeing Paul's presentation of the dire needs, I requested that the $1,400 be donated to Southeast Light on Block Island, RI (aka Southeast Block Island.)

Congratulations everyone on your support for this historic lighthouse.

All righty then!!! Southeast Light is my favorite light right on my favorite island. Harbour Lights' donation to help this beacon is a very generous gift. There is lots to do to Southeast Light to get it back in shape.

Thank you, Harbour Lights!

John asked me to post some of the images from the presentation that I did at the reunion showing that although the lighthouse was saved from falling off the edge of the cliff, it hasn't been saved from falling apart.

It definitely looks like the Lighthouse could use the $1400- and then some.

Looks like a good choice for the donation.

Wow! That's bad. I hope the $1400 helps to make it better.

I viewed the pictures at the reunion and the choice of SEBlock is great.

I had no idea that this light was in such bad shape! Hopefully this can be fixed soon. Thanks for posting the pictures. This should open a few eyes! What a great light! We don't need to lose this one!

I think we should also acknowledge Tom and Joyce Abbott for the pictures they posted in the Wacko Pin 2002 nominations thread 2 months ago. I think those pictures really opened the eyes of alot of us collectors about the sorry state of SE Block....and they certainly influenced me in my vote for the next pin.

Correct you are.. Doc. It was Tom and Joyce Abbott's pictures that made me so determined to get to Block Island and to shoot my images for the presentation at my photo seminars at the reunion.

Thanks DocJ44. The pictures we posted for the WACKO pin nomination were taken when we went back for the HLs Providence Reunion. Even back then there was a problem with water in the basement and the upper floors were in really sad shape. But, we didn't realize the extent of deterioration over the past two years until we saw Paul's presentation at the Reunion. Thanks Paul for taking and sharing the latest pictures. This is a beautiful, one of a kind, lighthouse and it would be a shame to lose it. This light is very special to us, as Tom's brother, Dr. Gerry Abbott, worked long and hard to help raise the money for the move.

Image, sometime in the near future making a reservation to stay at the SE Light Bed and Breakfast.

Great choice John!!!

We didn't realize it was in such bad shape. Years ago before we really paid attention to lighthouses we watched a story on the moving of Southeast Block and of course were lulled into thinking that everything was ok with this light. Boy were we wrong. Hopefully this donation will help bring the plight of this structure to front and center for the preservation effort.

Great Choice John and nice coverage of the deterioration Paul. By the way, the folks on the island use the term "Southeast Light, Block Island" rather than "Southeast Block".

Good choice. Beyond the money, which is essential, is their any other opportunity to provide assistance? It's one of my favorites too, although I do not have it in my HL collection.

Great choice! I just hope since this light is getting public money for restoration purposes it doesn't become another "B&B".

imho

When restoration on the lighthouse has been completed the "public" funding will probably disappear. Maintenance will be expensive. Southeast Light is not easily accessible and therefore revenue from visitors will probably not be enough for maintenance. Renting out one of the keeper's quarters could generate the maintenance revenue. Hopefully it will not turn into a just another bed and breakfast.

Has there been an estimate done with respect to the funding requirements of addressing all the needs of this light? Looks to be very substantial.

Good photos Paul ... really does point out the seriousness of the restoration needs!!

It is too bad to see it moved and no further work done on it.If it were to become a bed and breakfast on a par with East Brother they could keep it up like it needs to.Bill O'Brien
