Thanks for the heads up on the History Channel. I checked it out and it's on in this area. FRom the looks of the info, it appears that it should be a must see for the lighthouse enthusiast.

I had just finished watching the documentary on the history channel about lighthouses.That was some show and was very informative.The stories about the fresnel lens'was very enlightening to say the least.Cape Hatteras,what a beautiful lighthouse.

Damn, I missed it.

I checked my cable guide but didn't see it. Maybe because I had HGTV on my brain from that post about Bodie I was looking there. Guess I should have verified the post rather than rely on my memory! Was this a new program, or a re-run? Think I've seen most of them at least once.

It was a repeat of the "Modern Marvels" lighthouse episode.

Ashamed to say, I was so tired, I started dozing off and actually TURNED IT OFF before it was over. Lucky me, I taped it the last time it was on!

It was great. I wish it would have mention the names of the lights. Or put a caption under them stating Their name. Lucky I knew 90% of them.
It is was still being advertised last night after it was over that it would be on at 10. I don't know that if that was a miss-take or if it is going to air again on tonight.

Just finished watching it on tape. What a show! Definetly one of the better ones I've seen!!!!

Thanks for the heads up about the show last night. I got the chance to watch it. The caffeine I had with dinner last night kept me up long enough to watch the show. Sean had no choice but to watch it and get a little lighthouse education last night. He thought it was funny that I knew all the lighthouse names and was naming most of the speakers by voice before they would show them. That probally convinced him even more about how nuts I am!

The "Lighthouses" one is not scheduled to run again in March, but on 3-5 at 7 AM (local/Easter?) there is one on the Statue of Liberty and on 3/5 @ 10 PM and 3/6 @ 2 AM, there is one on the Mackinaw Bridge.

I believe you can buy tapes of the programs through the web site.

I saw the last 45 minutes after watching NY #33 being retired!

I had a plumbing contractor we sometimes use call me Friday just to tell me about that program- then Sunday after church someone left me a video that they taped Friday night. It's great to have folks watch out for you. I did watch it, had never seen it,I thought it was really great!

One benefit of being in the Mountain Time Zone is that 10PM shows come on at 8PM so sleep doesn't interfer so often. Boy, that real brief shot of Cape Lookout just wasn't enough!! Why is that A&E networks, and occasionally PBS, can see there is an interest in historical structures but the big networks aim for such low IQs? Anyone else old enough to remember "You Are There" with Walter Cronkite? :rolleyes:

I watched the Mackinac Bridge story last night and waited patiently to the end to see the hoards of folks who show up annually on Labor Day to walk the 5 miles of it. Speaking of bridges, if HL's going to be making more of them with nearby lighthouses, there are quite a few candidates!

I didn't catch the Mackinaw Bridge story - but with the A&E channels, you only have to wait and they WILL repeat.

I remember the day the Big Mac opened up. I was there with my parents for the dedication and we were among the first non-official cars to cross the bridge on opening day. I believe it was in 1958.

Before the bridge, getting to the UP could entail a long wait especially in hunting season. Cars would line up along the streets in Mackinaw City waiting their turn to drive onto the car ferries. Gas stations along the streets had 100 foot+ gas hoses so they could fill the tanks without people getting out of line.

G. Mennen 'Soapy' Williams was governor then. Now there was a man who could remember names!

Each 4th of July, 'Soapy' attended a breakfast at my Dad's Masonic lodge and every year when he came back, he could rattle off the guy's names like they were long-lost friends.

I walked across Big Mac on Labor Day, 1970 with Governor Bill Milliken (and several thousand other people.) I was working on Milliken's campaign staff at the time.

Acording to the show the bridge opened in November of 1957 but the hoopla was postponed until the following spring when the weather would be better. It was pretty bad then too.

Guess I was there on the Dedication Day, not the opening day. I know it was summer.
