Anyone ever hear of the Green Island Lighthouse? A friend of mine gave me a magazine entitled "Wild Ohio" (Summer 2001 edition). It is published by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources - Division of Wildlife. Green Island is located on Lake Erie and is an ODNR Division of Wildlife-owned wildlife area. This lighthouse was built in 1864 and all that remains is the brickwork. It is surrounded by trees and it looks a little like Stonington, just a little taller. The article states that very few people even know that it exists. The article also states the Green Island in uninhabited and not open to the public, even though the lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places! From looking at the picture, it looks like the stonework is still in good condition. It's a shame that this unique light can't be saved for all to see!

My first glance at Mombo's picture link made me think of Old Field Light. Green Island Light is one I've never heard of before. Bob

I saw an article about the light a few years ago. We are going to try to boat out to it next summer. May wade over to the shore and get some photos up close, if other boats are not around. I know it is hidden within the woods somewhat.
It is in very sad shape right now, and I don't believe the tower section even exists at all anymore. [This message has been edited by Rod Watson (edited 12-02-2001).]

Thanks for the link Mombo! It looks nothing like that now! There are many trees surrounding the light now. Probably growing on the inside also! Hard to tell from the picture, which was taken from the front. I don't know if the lantern room is standing now, but in the picture in the magazine, it was still there. It doesn't state how old the picture is. Bob, you are right. It does look more like Old Field from the picture in Mombo's link.
