If you're traveling to the southern part of the outer banks of North Carolina, you can now tour the Oak Island Lighthouse. The lower level will be open for regular tours and you can climb by appointment.

Call 910-278-1328 for appointments.

I have been inside the base of Oak Island LH, but at the time they were not allowing climbs.

This is a photo taken inside the base looking straight up and shows the intricate ladder system. Not an easy climb, but I think a few of our forum members have since done the climb. Bob Scroope?

Someone reminded me today of the photo gallery contained within the Friends of Oak Island web site. There is a whole series of interior shots from top to bottom...kind of neat to see.

The tower is 158 ft tall. The series of ships ladders that make up the climbing system has a total of 134 steps to the lantern gallery level.
