Again another bit of info taken from the Chesapeake Chapter...

INTERNATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE CONFERENCE TO FOCUS ON CHILDREN

The historic maritime City of New Bedford, Massachusetts and the American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF, will be hosting an International Lighthouse Conference (ILC) this September 17-21, 2002.

This conference will be quite different from past lighthouse conferences that have dealt with such issues as preservation, and fund raising initiatives since it will primarily focus on the education of children for lighthouse preservation.

The conference will include many workshops and presentations from numerous educators and lighthouse groups from around the country. A special treat for the children of the area during the conference will be a helicopter arrival by George Morgan, "The Flying Santa of the Lighthouses", who has been keeping alive a tradition that began with Bill Wicapaw dropping presents to New England Lighthouse keepers back in 1928.

For more information contact: The American Lighthouse Foundation, PO Box 889, Wells, Maine 04090, phone: 207-646-0515. Details will be posted as they become available at http://www.lighthousefoundation.org/.

I like to see this....children should get started young appreciating our historical landmarks. What a great way to assure continuing preservation.

I've seen a big push to get kids interested in lighthouses lately. A lot of organizations have or are in the process of putting together a school program either to have teachers teach lessons involving lighthouses or to have a special assembly to introduce kids to lighthouses.
Sometimes it is the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles taking the kids to a lighthouse that does the trick. I took my nephew to Tybee around Thanksgiving and he still talks about it each time we are on the phone.
I hope to see big things come out of this conference.
