Here's some excerpts from a lenghty article in the Virginia Pilot. Doesn't look too good for the conservationists.

"We are going to fight it politically, publicly and morally said Currituck County Commissioner Paul O'Neal. We're going to combat them any way we can think of."

"Sen. Marc Basnight, president of Pro-tem of the North Carolina Senate, has received 516 messages from the conservationist group's supporters. Amy Fulk, Basnight's spokeswoman, said; of those, 154 were from North Carolina, but the messages are not swaying his opinion. Marc supports the county 100 percent, but he appreciates hearing from people."

"Currituck promotes its cause on the county's web site and with a television ad on WSKY Channel 4, broadcast in South Hampton Roads and northeastern North Carolina. The ad features Norris Austin, A Corolla native and a descendant of lighthouse keepers, speaking in front of the lighthouse. I cannot understand why any U.S. agency would have a problem deciding who gets the lighthouse, he says in the ad. The light is part of Currituck County heritage and should belong to Currituck County."

"A link on the county's web site lets visitors send e-mails supporting the county's osition. So far 826 messages have come in."
