Hi Knowledgeable LH Enthusiasts,
I'm looking for some help to come up with a list of lighthouses that have been sold by the Coast Guard or any other arm of the Federal Government to nonprofit organizations for restoration. Any detail along with the names would be appreciated. Name of LH, date, nonprofit, any detail on restoration, etc.
We're trying to use this as part of our justification for Plum Island LH and there's nothing like referencing success.
Thanks for your anticipated help.
Bob

ps I know that Montauk is leased and Fire Island has been transferred the Fire Island National Seashore but I'm looking for ownership transfer to a nonprofit. Thanks again.

Bob: To my knowledge when the Coast Guard wishes to dispose of a lighthouse the sale is handled through the US General Services Administration which has regional offices throughout the country, i.e. Galloo Island went through the New England Region. The person who appears to be in charge of this region is Meta Cushing, 617-565-5823, meta.cushing@gsa.gov. She certainly replied promptly to my inquiry so she might be a good starting point for you in obtaining the information.

Here is the main site for the US GSA:
http://propertydisposal.gsa.gov/Property/

Here are toll free numbers for the regional offices and field offices from a brochure I received along with the bid package for Galloo:

800-755-1946 Boston,Ma.- Regional
800-473-7836 Atlanta, Ga. - Regional
800-833-4317 Ft. Worth, Tx. - Regional
888-GSA-LAND San Fran., Ca. - Regional

800-755-1946 Chicago, Il. - Field
800-814-6205 Auburn, Wa. - Field

Thanks Sue for the info. I'll be sure to use it.
I'm still looking for names of transfers of LH to nonprofits, I know we have a lot of restoration groups reporting to the Forum.
I guess leases as well ownership would be worth knowing.
Thanks again,
Bob

Bob,
The Maine Lights program xfered a bunch. Also working on some in Michigan. Add in Bodie & Ocracoke, maybe Lookout that have been xfer to NPS.

Also, check with Chesapeak Chapter - in the last newsletter was a short article on legidlation introduced to enable easier xfer to non-profits.

I believe I may have misinterpreted your question a bit Bob as probably a lot of this type don't go through the GSA?

Hudson Athens would be one for sure. http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/forums/Forum5/HTML/000263.html

Esopus Meadows is leased from the CG.

Charlotte-Genesee has been owned by Monroe County since 1981 who leased it to the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Historical Society for 20 years. The Society began restoration work in 1983. I'll check more upstate NY lights for you as time permits.

Any lighthouse that houses a museum is probaby at the least leased if not owned by the organization responsible?

Jeremy D'Entremont could probably help with the NE lights. (keeper@lighthouse.cc)
