Please check out this page: http://www.floridalighthouses.org/preservation_alert.htm

It tells of the current plight of St. Marks and what we can do to help.

Lamar,

Thanks for the news. Linda and I have visited St. Marks several times. It's the one lighthouse site that has most evoked the circumstances of a turn-of-the-century lighthouse setting for us. It's been wonderful visiting the St. Marks lighthouse and the National Wildlife Refuge. We saw our first Purple Gallinule and Pileated Woodpecker there.
Cape Hatteras garnered a lot of publicity to move, restore and preserve it. The Gulf is within about 50' of the St. Marks structure. This, like many others, is a light that needs attention and help.

Rick

I missed this post as I was out of town yesterday.

Over the weekend I talked with a gentleman who lives very near St. Mark's Lighthouse.
The several conversations we had about the light were very interesting. His uncle was one of the keepers in years past when there was no road to the light. His mother was taken over on a dingy to teach the 9 children of the keeper and his father hauled rocks from a rock quarry by boat and put down to help with erosion. As a boy, Fred mowed the grass around the light. One of the keeper's daughter's is still alive and lives in Tallahassee. He has old photos he wants me to see...am I excited or what? Thanks Lamar for letting me know that I can send a contribution for restoring. A lot has to be done.

Derith

PS Rick glad to see your post..hope all is well.

PSS Lamar, didn't you say you wanted to go to Heceta Head? Come with me in July.

Uhhh, I don't think so Nana but thanks for the invitation. On the other hand, are you treating or is this Dutch?

Thanks Lamar....'appreciate the information. A "hundred thou" is quite a "shortfall". Does the FLA have some sort of orchastrated plan to make up the difference or are they going to rely on a public appeal? Is the state going to "kick in" anything?
