(snip) The National Park Service has awarded the Currituck Beach Lighthouse to Outer Banks Conservationists after a long and public battle with Currituck County for ownership of the historic beacon.

Currituck County plans to appeal the decision within the required 15 days, with support from Rep. Walter Jones Jr., R-N.C., vice chairman of the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Recreation and Public Lands, said Paul O'Neal, chairman of the Currituck County Board of Commissioners.(snip)

My day has been brightened. We are planning on visiting the Outer Banks in May. I am glad to read that Currituck will reopen. We were planning on visiting Currituck, but with the court battle we were not sure if we would be able to.

Again thanks to this article we are made HAPPY.

A logical decision! WOW! I can't believe the County has the ***** to even attempt an appeal. A victory to the OBC for their 13 years of dedication, and preservation. I was there in 1998, and thoroughly enjoyed my visit and climb. And the gift shop was my first exposure to lighthouse collectibles.

Great news! Hopefully those deciding the appeal will utilize the same sane reasoning to make their decision.

If they do there is no doubt that the appeal will fail and the lighthouse will remain in the hands of those who have cared for it for so long.

The process wasn't "fair"? You mean that part where your congressman, the one that had co-sponsored the original legislation, tried to bypass the law to hand you the lighthouse? You sound like a 8-year old child.

Way to go OBC!!!! 388-132, divided by four judges = 97-33 each.

I think we need to get the people who made this decision involved in the Bodie situation.

They seem to looking at things with an unbiased logical viewpoint.

This is wonderful news!

Should we write and send letters to Norton and Manson supporting OBC regarding the appeal?

"The appeal would go directly to Secretary of the Interior Gale A. Norton and Craig Manson, a former California judge who last year was named assistant interior secretary for fish, wildlife and parks, O'Neal said. The Park Service falls under Manson's jurisdiction."

Here are two local newpaper storties on the win for the OBC.

http://www.obsentinel.com/more_frontpage.cfm

Feds: OBC should get Currituck beacon

Here is a quote from the Outer Banks Sentinel article:

"The summary states that in the financial section of its application, the county said that it would support the lighthouse by charging an admission fee of $17 for the proposed Currituck Heritage Park, $5 of which would be allocated to the lighthouse property. Reviewers expressed concern that while the OBC projected more than $1 million in expenditures over the next five to seven years for repair, maintenance and other work, the county projected only one-tenth that amount. "

let's hope that the appeal goes the right way also. Maybe the scoring system should become a model.

Justa quick thought...

If the county were to get the light, it said it would pout it in the control of the Whalehead Club, a non-profit. However, one person on the county's side said that non-profits come and go. But they wanted to put the light under a non-profit's control!!!

Here is a copy of the email I received from the OBC last night!

I emailed them congratulating them and to wish them luck if an appeal was rendered. They emailed me back thanking me for my email and continuing support, and to notify me the lighthouse opened for touring on April 4th. The hours for the site and museum shop are 10am until 6pm April through October. November hours are 10am until 5pm. Jenn Barr is the executive director and she may be reached at (252) 453-8152 for further information. Their email is: obcinc@pinn.net

I'm still a little nervous about the appeal. I wouldn't put anything past Currituck County at this stage of the game. I know that its hard for them to look a "cash cow" in the face, then turn their back on it, knowing that it would be the right thing to do!

(In my heart I know the "Fed's" will do the right thing)
